Hammer Makes ‘The Woman in Black’ With Daniel Radcliffe

FEW names in horror command more respect than Hammer.

The director John Carpenter has said that seeing “The Curse of Frankenstein,” the first gothic hit by Hammer Film Productions, as a kid transformed him. Another esteemed veteran of the genre, Joe Dante, said the same movie lived up to its tag line promise to “haunt you forever.” And Martin Scorsese has described an obscure sequel, “Frankenstein Created Woman,” as “close to something sublime.”

What makes the enduring reputation of Hammer, the tiny British fantasy factory, even more impressive is that the company all but disappeared right as the horror genre boomed. Hammer struggled financially through much of the 1970s, ceasing production by the end of the decade. What’s more surprising perhaps is that since then reviving Hammer, built on sequels and remakes, has proven far more difficult than reanimating Frankenstein’s monster.

A group of admirers, including the director Richard Donner, looked into buying Hammer in the 1980s before discovering that it didn’t own many of its best-known properties. A consortium led by the art dealer Charles Saatchi did buy Hammer in 2000, announcing plans to make new films but never doing so. Then in 2007 Simon Oakes, a cable television executive who had noticed the frequency that Hammer was mentioned in the press, spearheaded the acquisition of the company’s film library and raised what was reported as $50 million to make new movies. His focus has not been on remaking Hammer movies, although he’s not ruling that out.

His challenge is capitalizing on the affection for Hammer while updating the company to adjust with the times. In its heyday, which roughly spanned a decade starting in the mid-1950s, the films broke ground with their lush Technicolor, sexual frankness and unlikely mix of teasing exploitation and classically trained class. None of those elements are new anymore. As popular as Hammer is among horror buffs, it is also relatively unknown to young audiences reared on “Paranormal Activity.”

The early efforts by the rebooted Hammer, including the acclaimed remake “Let Me In” and “The Resident,” have not found huge box office success. But Mr. Oakes, the chief executive and president, said that those were only “building blocks” setting up his ambitious next move, a $13 million adaptation of “The Woman in Black,” opening Friday. Like the classic Hammer movies, this ghost story, shot in Britain, is a period piece with a high-toned pedigree. (Adapted from a Susan Hill novella, it also was a long-running West End play.) In keeping with Hammer tradition, it has a star. In his first post-Harry Potter film role, Daniel Radcliffe plays a guilt-ridden father and lawyer who starts seeing ghosts while going through the estate of a recently deceased woman. “For Hammer to succeed, it has to honor its legacy,” Mr. Oakes said by Skype.

What that means is not obvious, since Hammer has a long, colorful history full of reinventions. But the upscale direction of the new Hammer is a far cry from the company’s origins. It was founded in 1934 by a group led by a music hall comic named William Hinds, whose stage name was Will Hammer. While the company dabbled in comedy and science fiction, its most sustained and successful movies were gothic costume dramas that revisited the classic Universal Pictures monsters.

This cycle kicked off in 1957 with the taut “Curse of Frankenstein,” a significant departure from the Boris Karloff classic, although many of the changes were ones of necessity. While the novel was in the public domain, the earlier film’s signature neck bolts were not. Hammer beefed up the doctor character and made the monster appear more recognizably human. The streamlined script kept the shooting schedule short and cut the rampaging villagers because, well, crowds are expensive.

The company’s house screenwriter Jimmy Sangster’s memoir was tellingly called “Do You Want It Good or Tuesday?” And the tireless go-to director Terrence Fisher was famously efficient, scrupulously storyboarding and never taking lunch. While they worked quickly and on a shoestring, this gave them urgency and a bare-bones intimacy. In a decade full of flying saucers and atomic age-inspired beasts, the scares in films like “Curse of Frankenstein” were often found in close-ups of the human face.

A dry English wit also sneaks into these creepy productions, embodied deftly by one of the Hammer’s two biggest stars, Peter Cushing, who played Dr. Frankenstein opposite the other, Christopher Lee, as the silent monster. Whereas American stars of low-budget horror often indulged in flamboyant camp, Mr. Cushing underplayed beautifully. After assisting the monster in killing an innocent, he opens the next scene at breakfast, saying in civilized tone, “Pass the marmalade.”

The success of “The Curse of Frankenstein” led the following year to “Horror of Dracula,” in which, long before “Twilight,” Mr. Lee’s vampire made his female victims swoon. His seductive entrance made Mr. Lee a major star and also captivated a young Mr. Scorsese, who recently cast him in “Hugo.” Hammer movies, replete with heaving bosoms and laddish innuendo, were often more explicit about sex than violence. “People wanted the beautiful women with the splash of blood,” said Shane Briant, who appeared in four Hammer movies. “That’s why they went to see Hammer.”

With their resourceful design and startling hues, Hammer movies also looked much more expensive than they were. “It was a big deal to see color in horror movies back then,” said Tobe Hooper, director of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” who explained in an earlier interview that he loved Hammer so much that as a child he made eight-millimeter imitations. Glenn McQuaid, a director whose early love of Hammer inspired his 2008 film, “I Sell the Dead,” argued in an interview that the vivid coloring in movies like “Brides of Dracula” anticipated the flamboyantly gruesome movies of Dario Argento. “It’s stunning,” he said, “the lush, surreal use of lilacs and red and deep purple.”

Hammer began to face stiff competition in the early 1960s from low-budget American horror, including Roger Corman’s series of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations. “The Hammer films were a fraction more obvious,” Mr. Corman said in a previous interview. “I was trying to be a little more subtle, but basically we were doing the same things.” That was not the case with the horror explosion of the following decade, when more urgently contemporary and brutally harsh horror movies like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “The Exorcist” made Hammer seem stuffy.

Hammer struggled to catch up, recasting vampires in a modern context (“Dracula A.D. 1972”) or serving up nude lesbian vampires (“The Vampire Lovers”). But such attempts often seemed a step slow, or worse. Adding a rape scene to the 1969 film “Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed” not only alienated the star Veronica Carlson, who refused to act in another Hammer film, but also appeared random and desperate.

Too $hort, Lil' Kim Tried To Make 'Musical Sex' On 'Call Me'

'We tried to, like, have sex on the song,' Too $hort tells 'RapFix Live' of his and Lil' Kim's 1997 collabo.

Too $hort has built quite the reputation with the ladies in his 30-plus years in rap. Songs like "Freaky Tales" and "I'm a Player" expertly showcase Short Dog's ability to seduce women with his raps, so when his record label requested that he work with Lil' Kim on the 1997 single "Call Me," Kim's then on-and-off boyfriend the Notorious B.I.G. was more than a little concerned.

"I paid for the tickets for Kim and her manager to come to Atlanta and I went to pick them up to take them to the studio and who gets off the plane? No Lil' Kim, it was Biggie," Too $hort recalled with a laugh when he appeared on Wednesday's episode of "RapFix Live."

Though $hort and B.I.G. had built a good rapport before the Brooklyn great was slain in 1997, prior to recording with Kim, they didn't really know each other. Too $hort remembers B.I.G. coming off the plane on a pair of crutches that he was forced to use after he was involved in a car accident. The two sat down to talk, and according to $hort, the Notorious one inquired about the Oakland rapper's intentions with his artist and sometime love interest. "So what's goin' on with you and Kim? What's happenin'?" Too $hort remembered Biggie asking.

After $hort explained to Big that he only was interested in recording with Kim for his single, the "Juicy" rapper approved the collaboration. "He wanted to know what was goin' on with his little thang before he let it happen," $hort said. "So I explained it to him... and sure enough she showed up on the next flight. We got in the lab and we worked it out." Kim, who titled her 1996 debut album Hardcore, had become known for her sexually explicit lyrics, just like Too $hort, but the first version of "Call Me" didn't quite meet expectations, $hort revealed. "Believe it or not, we did the song and everybody said, 'Man, it's not dirty enough,' " $hort laughed.

Eventually they re-recorded the dirty version that fans have come to know. "We tried to, like, have sex on the song," he said. "It wasn't physical sex, but we tried to make musical sex. I think we achieved it."

The Carpetbagger: A Family Film From a Coppola Family Member

PARK CITY, Utah – “Goats” is the type of Sundance movie you could accidentally drive right past. The title isn’t all that enticing. Its Tuesday-night premiere slot is deep in the festival, when your attention is starting to sputter.

Sundance Film Festival

Sundance Film Festival

News, features and multimedia from The Times at the Sundance Film Festival, Jan. 19-29.

But take a closer look at most films here, and you’ll find a compelling reason to pay attention. “Goats” is no exception. Its director, Christopher Neil, is Francis Ford Coppola’s nephew. And, yes, Mr. Coppola gave him pointers.

“Francis has seen a number of different cuts,” Mr. Neil said. “He was enormously helpful in the area of editing. He challenged me to reshape certain parts of the story. He pointed me back toward aspects of the movie I had kind of forgotten.”

He added, “We’re always helping each other out,” referring to his cousins Sofia (he has worked as a rehearsal coach on three of her films), and Roman. Another cousin, the actor Jason Schwartzman (“Bored to Death”), co-wrote the score.

“Goats,” nine years in the making, is a coming-of-age comedy that stars Vera Farmiga, Justin Kirk, Minnie Driver, Ty Burrell, David Duchovny and a buzzy young actor named Graham Phillips that may be more familiar as the son on “The Good Wife.”

It centers on a colorful family of outsized personalities. Sound familiar?

“Sofia and Francis and everyone else told me that my first movie should be personal,” Mr. Neil said. “I’m a good listener.”

Woman In Black premiere: Chemmy Alcott shrugs off Katrina Witt's 'big' comment as she dazzles premiere

By Emily Sheridan

Last updated at 8:35 PM on 24th January 2012

Her confidence took a blow when she was called 'big' in an apparent miscommunication by Dancing On Ice judge Katrina Witt.

But alpine ski race Chemmy Alcott bounced back tonight as she made a dazzling appearance at the Woman In Black world premiere.

The blonde athlete, 29, looked stunning in a black Suzanne Neville prom dress as she posed on the red carpet of the Southbank premiere.

Taking a break from her training with Sean Rice, Alcott was clearly excited to be at the screening.

On her Twitter page, she arranged to meet recent Dancing On Ice evictee Andy Akinwolere and fellow contestant Corey Feldman on the red carpet.

She tweeted: 'Can't wait to get Sunday's choreography then red carpet with @Nomy_Mary for premier of A Woman in Black. Fun day!! X.

'I am coming straight from the rink! How glam haha. Change in car on the way.... On my way to premier. HATE being late!'

Alcott's appearance came after Dancing On Ice judge Witt apologised for calling the ski racer 'big' during Sunday's live show.

Witt, 46, insisted she was complimenting the 5ft 6in star: 'I said she's a big girl and she misunderstood.

'I meant it in a complimentary way, that she is a tall girl. As a skater I was a big girl, I was tall, I was big.

'I must say I am sorry. I think it was really a language thing so sorry, sorry Great Britain.'

And it appeared Alcott was ready to move on, writing on her Twitter today: 'Let us not make a mountain out of a mole hill over the Katarina Witt comment. I am proud of my athletic body.It takes a lot of work! Fullstop.'

The Woman In Black follows a young lawyer Arthur Kipps, who travels to a remote house on an island somewhere in Britain to put the last affairs of a deceased client in order.

He is disturbed by the sight of a ghost at the client's funeral, who children can see but refuse to speak of.

As the ghost becomes increasingly malevolent, the town is thrown into a frenzy of terror, with the 'house on the marsh', becoming the focal point of the haunting.

The Woman In Black is released in the UK on February 10 and in the U.S. on February 3.

Best Actresses: Was 2011 the Year of the Woman?

Another awards season, another round of complaints that there are few good roles for actresses, unless you're Meryl Streep. And yet, this year's awards-hopeful movies featured terrific performances by actresses in a wide variety of multifaceted roles. If anything, the 2011 crop of potential Best Actresses and Best Supporting Actresses include fully realized female characters who are much more fascinating than their male counterparts.

Actress Robin Wright (herself criminally overlooked for her 2011 starring role in "The Conspirator") was one of the first to notice this, proclaiming 2011 "the Year of the Woman" while presenting earlier this month at the Critics Choice Awards. Awards Daily blogger Sasha Stone picked up the theme and ran with it, echoing Wright's citation of "Bridesmaids" and "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and adding some other strong female characters who put their stamp on 2011, including the ensemble of "The Help," Chloe Moretz's aspiring writer in "Hugo," Kathy Bates' Gertrude Stein and Marion Cotillard's bohemian Adriana in "Midnight in Paris," savvy teen Shailene Woodley in "The Descendants," Berenice Bejo's rising starlet in "The Artist," Tilda Swinton's haunted mom in "We Need to Talk About Kevin," and, of course, Michelle Williams's Marilyn Monroe in "My Week With Marilyn" and Streep's Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

Still, Stone sees this trend as a blip in an otherwise boring awards race. I'm not so sure. Besides the roles she mentioned, there were many others of note -- Glenn Close and Janet McTeer playing women living as men in 19th-century Ireland in "Albert Nobbs," Keira Knightley's psychoanalytic pioneer in "A Dangerous Method," Vanessa Redgrave as Shakespeare's fiercest mom in "Coriolanus," Mia Wasikowska in the title role in "Jane Eyre," Anna Paquin as a tormented teen in "Margaret," Elizabeth Olsen as an escapee from a cult in "Martha Marcy May Marlene," Kirsten Dunst as a depressed bride awaiting the end of the world in "Melancholia," Carey Mulligan as the sex-addict's sister with intimacy issues of her own in "Shame," and Charlize Theron's bitter writer in "Young Adult."

By contrast, look at the men's roles up for consideration this year. Many of them are subtle and even recessive -- Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill's thoughtful number crunchers in "Moneyball," Ryan Gosling's nameless and enigmatic wheelman in "Drive," Gary Oldman's nearly silent intelligence bureaucrat in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," and Jean Dujardin and Max Von Sydow's wordless characters in "The Artist" and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," respectively. Only a handful of men's roles (Christopher Plummer's gay senior in "Beginners," Albert Brooks' vicious gangster in "Drive," Leonardo DiCaprio's decade-spanning Hoover in "J. Edgar," Michael Fassbender's sexual compulsive in "Shame") offered the kind of juicy, sink-your-teeth showiness that wins Oscars and that was par for the course for this year's actresses.

What's noteworthy about most of these women's performances is that they stand independently, even when there are strong male performances in the movie as well (as in "The Artist," "Shame," and "Martha Marcy May Marlene"). The women are fully-rounded characters on their own; they're not defined by their relationship to the men in their lives. This is most strikingly true of the female ensembles in "Bridesmaids" and "The Help." It's astonishing enough to have one such mainstream Hollywood movie in a year, but to have two almost seems an embarrassment of riches.

Granted, most of the great female roles offered by mainstream Hollywood this year were packed into just those two movies; most of the others were in art-house films that few moviegoers have seen (though that may change as Oscar night approaches and year-end indie films open wider across the country). Indeed, in mainstream movies, the old complaint is still valid that there aren't enough well-rounded roles for actresses. But then, Hollywood doesn't offer enough well-rounded roles for actors either; in fact, Hollywood seldom does well-rounded anymore. It does comic books and action extravaganzas and cheap horror chillers and broad comedies. It leaves dramas to the indie world. It's no wonder, then, that A-list stars routinely drop their asking prices to appear in indie movies. The parts are more interesting and more likely to win awards.

Maybe 2011 really wasn't that different, then. Maybe there have always been fascinating roles for women, just not where most moviegoers have been looking. Women moviegoers have long known, if they want to see women as fully human as themselves on screen, they can't just stick to mainstream date-night movies that presents women (even romantic comedy heroines) as mere arm-candy to men. Then again, if Hollywood executives didn't treat every successful, female-driven movie as fluke, if they recognized that movies like "Bridesmaids" and "The Help" represent a demographic of half the population that will pay to see women like themselves in movies, and if they decided to cater to that demographic and not just to teenage boys -- well, then we'd really see a Year of the Woman at the multiplex.

Man Sentenced For Stalking Halle Berry

Halle BerryA man accused of literally scaling the fence of Halle Berry’s home will remain in jail after pleading no contest to stalking the oscar winning actress. The deputy district attorney said the man was sentenced to serve 386 days in county jail Thursday, but he has already served half of the term.

The 28 year old was placed on five years of probation, a year of psychological counseling and ordered to stay away from the actress for the next ten years.

The man, Richard Franco, was arrested outside Berry’s home in July after repeatedly coming onto her property. On one occasion, the actress stated in a sworn declaration that Franco attempted to enter her kitchen but she was able to lock the door before he got inside. A burglary charge file against him then was dropped.

However, now he couldn’t leave well enough alone and quit stalking the actress. He was arrested and for good reason. Everyone has the right to feel safe in his or her own home. Regardless if he or she is an actress or just an ordinary person.

Halle Berry is no stranger to the big screen, she is most remembered for her role in “Catwoman”. Although she has done several acting parts in many other movies. She told sources she feels a little better knowing the man who was stalking her is now in jail. And yet she doesn’t know how she will feel when he gets out.

Kate Beckinsale on Her Globes Fashion, Staying Fit and Special Moniker

The lovely Kate Beckinsale arrived to "The Grove" to chat with "Extra's" Maria Menounos. Beckinsale, who wore a stunning Roberto Cavalli gown to the Golden Globes and landed on many best-dressed lists, said she endured some pain for the sake of fashion. "It's an outfit only good for standing up. When I sat down, I got poked by corset bones."

kate-beckinsale-grove.jpg

Beckinsale noted that wearing the gorgeous, cream-colored dress to the Globes came after filming her action movie, "Contraband." "I was beaten up so much during that movie, it feels like a nice reward for that."

kate-beckinsale-gown.jpg

The busy mom and movie star said she is a bona fide yogi, revealing she stays in shape mainly with "yoga, that's it. I'm horrified I've become this person who's into yoga."

She added, "I'm don't have Buddhas everywhere and all that stuff, but I find it keeps me in shape, and you get to lie down at the end for ten minutes, which is the key that keeps me in the game."

Kate who also stars in the vampire sequel "Underworld: Awakening," speaks four languages. "I was fluent in Russian, but I haven't really practiced it, obviously, in the last decade. I lived in Paris for a year, so that got very cemented, and then I learned German as well, and then I find I can understand and speak Italian, so I'm quite useful in Europe."

Her husband, Len Wiseman, appropriately nicknamed her "C-3PO."

"Contraband" is in theaters now, and the vampire/lycan battle in "Underworld: Awakening" begins Friday.

Tyga's 'Rack City' Is 'Beneficial' To Strippers, Wale Says

'I'm just happy that I can be a part of a record that's making so many young, ambitious dancers so much money,' Wale quips on remix video set.

Radio, music videos, mixtapes and digital presence are all fine gauges of what's hot in hip-hop, but the set lists at gentlemen's clubs should never be overlooked.

At the moment, Tyga's "Rack City" seems to be the current strip-club crown holder, and now with the remix video featuring Wale and Fabolous coming, the record doesn't appear to be losing steam any time soon.

"I'm just happy that I can be a part of a record that's influencing and making so many young, ambitious dancers so much money," Wale playfully told MTV News from the set of Tyga's remix video in Miami.

This past Friday, Tyga gathered Wale and Fab to shoot their portion of the "Rack City" video. On set, the trio joked about how the track keeps strip clubs open for business.

"I think it's important that we continue to make songs like this, because it's keeping the whole game of ... ," Wale started before completely losing his train of thought.

"The cycle of the economy," Loso chimed in.

"It's very beneficial to so many young women across the country," Wale picked back up. "The strip clubs are stress relief. Welcome to Rack City!"

Tyga just nodded in agreement. "Everything they said," he added with a laugh.

The DJ Mustard-produced track is slated to appear on Tyga's upcoming Young Money debut Careless World. The song's original was adapted from the "Grand Theft Auto" series of video games. In the clip, which weaves a campy crime tale with performance shots, Tyga plays an out-of-luck bandit who steals from the fictional Rack City's underworld boss, Mr. Rose.

What are you expecting from the "Rack City" remix video? Let us know in the comments!

Has Heidi Klum taken the flared trend too far? Model looks in danger of losing a child in the folds of her gigantic trousers

By Holly Thomas

Last updated at 1:56 AM on 8th January 2012

It's a popular seventies trend that is revisited once in a while with varying success.

But it appears that Heidi Klum took the flared jeans look rather too far on this occasion.

The 38-year-old wore a pair of ridiculously wide trousers as she took her daughters Leni and Lou to a ballet class in West Hollywood today.

Don't trip! Heidi Klum wore an incredibly wide pair of flared trousers as she took her daughter Leni to dance class in Brentwood, LA today

Don't trip! Heidi Klum wore an incredibly wide pair of flared trousers as she took her daughter Leni to dance class in Brentwood, LA today

The star could easily have tripped as she navigated her way from an Italian restaurant to the Brentwood class, as might seven-year-old Leni.

She was joined by her husband Seal, who helpfully carried two-year-old Lou.

She and Seal enjoyed a holiday with their children skiing in Aspen in Colorado over the festive season.

Heidi managed to look rather more chic as she hit the slopes in an all-black outfit.

The Victoria's Secret model said in a recent interview she loves experimenting with different fashion styles.

'Fashion is always fun, interesting, new and different. I love to get dressed in unusual things.,' she revealed.

'I'm not scared - when I go on the red carpet, I always wear what my gut tells me, not what people say you should wear in order to be safe. I experiment with clothes - I love clothes.'

Her attempt to emulate the classic seventies look didn't go quite as well as that of Jessica Alba, who has also been sporting the trend.

Jessica donned an impressive pair of 70s-style bell bottoms while running errands in Los Angeles yesterday.

The shapely actress looked chic as she went on a brief shopping trip in the upmarket Brentwood area.

Jessica is looking back to her best after a gruelling exercise regime following the birth of her second daughter Haven in August, which she tweeted about to inspire her overweight fans.

And she showed it off to the full in an attractive blouse, which was tantalisingly unbuttoned at the top, her tight-fitting flares and fashionable sunglasses.

Selena Gomez: What's Next After 'Wizards Of Waverly Place'?

'We're going to take a break from music,' Gomez, who is working on several movies, announces.

Selena Gomez will wave her magic wand one final time on January 6 when the series finale of "Wizards of Waverly Place" airs. And as she looks forward to what's next in 2012, she says one thing she won't be doing is releasing new music.

"We're going to take a break from music," Gomez told E! News. "My band and I are going to chill on that for a second. I'll be doing two films in the beginning of [2012], which I'm excited about. They are both different and things I've never played before and will be fun for me."

As she closes the door on "Wizards" for good, and on her music for now, the teen superstar says that saying goodbye to her Disney show is bittersweet. "[My fans are] definitely not [ready for it to end], according to my Twitter feed and everything else," she said. "Of course, we could stay on, but we want to move on and stuff. But the show will live on forever and we're all grateful for that. I spent more time with them than my own family. It was amazing."

But fans of the star should prepare for what's next. Gomez will shoot the darker "Spring Breakers" in early 2012 and has been rumored to be attached to a film called "Hot Mess."

For "Spring Breakers," Gomez will work with director Harmony Korine (the man behind the super-dark '90s classic "Kids"). The movie revolves around a group of college girls who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break. After they land in jail, they become entangled with the drug and arms dealer who bailed them out. James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens and Emma Roberts are also attached to the project.

"It's a different character than I have ever played before," Gomez told MTV News about the project. "It's a different kind of vibe, I think, than people are used to seeing me in. What you're going to see is more raw, I think. It's going to be raw and more about acting."

Joaquin Phoenix Strikes A Pose For The Cameras

Well here’s a celebrity we don’t see much of.  Joaquin Phoenix was seen taking a cigarette break outside of a North Hollywood studio today.

Joaquin was wearing a ripped pair of jeans and a plain white tee and didn’t look like he was too happy that the cameras spotted him. At first he posed for the cameras but then he seemed a little irritated.

Joaquin has been pretty quiet after his whole ‘documentary’ thing with Casey Affleck.  I guess that didn’t work out as he planned.

'The Hunger Games' In 2012: Our Five Forecasts

From the film's premiere to casting 'Catching Fire,' Hobnobbing takes a look at what to look forward to this year.
By Amy Wilkinson

The past year boasted a cornucopia of "Hunger Games" highlights for fans to chew on, from the casting of Jennifer Lawrence as gritty heroine Katniss Everdeen to the first full-length trailer to the recent debut of Taylor Swift's soundtrack song "Safe and Sound." But as bountiful as 2011's harvest was, 2012 will offer a bumper crop of news from the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' dystopian tome as it finally hits theaters March 23.

Though our calls to Greasy Sae's Psychic Hotline have gone unanswered, we have a few educated guesses about what the new year holds for Panem's people. Read on for our five forecasts:

1. One more trailer
With just about two and a half months to go until the first film's debut, we'd bet a silver parachute that fans will get to feast on one more look at Katniss, Peeta and Gale before the tributes enter the arena. What another clip would include, well, we're less sure about that, but we wouldn't mind a closer look at life in District 12 or a more detailed glimpse at the other 22 tributes.

2. A full soundtrack announcement
Swift, the Civil Wars, the Decemberists and Arcade Fire's husband/wife duo of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne have all been secured for the T-Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack, but we suspect a few more artists will enter the fray before all is said and sung. I've already made my plea for Florence and the Machine, while NextMovie suggested acts like Snow Patrol and Regina Spektor for the much-anticipated album. We'll keep our ears to the ground for this one.

3. The film's premiere
Unless the apocalypse comes early, March 23 will be a blessed day for "Hunger Games" acolytes, as the flick will finally blaze into theaters. We expect more than a few faithful to camp out at their local cineplex for a midnight showing. And we're more than ready to drool over whatever confections Lawrence wears on the red carpet during the movie's premieres and publicity circuit.

4. Casting "Catching Fire"
With the second "Hunger Games" installment already slated for a November 22, 2013, release (and an Oscar-winning writer being eyed for the script), we expect the follow-up to begin shooting in mid- to late 2012 — which means a whole new slew of casting calls! Where are you Finnick, Johanna, Beetee and Mags?

5. First look at "Catching Fire"
Asking for a celluloid sneak would be a stretch, but we don't think it's completely inconceivable to think a first snapshot might find its way to the Web by the final days of 2012. Here's hoping the "Catching Fire" director (whomever he/she will be) isn't afraid to take a cue from "Breaking Dawn" helmer Bill Condon, who released the first photographic teaser for the final "Twilight" installments over Thanksgiving in 2010. Happy holidays, "Hunger Games" fans?
