Anne Hathaway Thanks 'Gutsy' Rivals After Golden Globes Win

Anne Hathaway's moving portrayal of Fantine in "Les Misérables" has become more than just awards-show buzz: The actress took home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture during Sunday's (January 13) show, moving her one step closer to a possible Oscar win.

"Blergh — thanks for that word, Tina [Fey]!" Hathaway said to the Golden Globes co-host. "Oh my gosh, this is happening. To the Hollywood Foreign Press, thank you so much for having me in his room full of extraordinary artists that have changed my life with their work. Thank you for this lovely blunt object that I will forevermore use as a weapon against self-doubt. And thank you for putting me, my work, in this category with great and gutsy actresses: Amy [Adams], Nicole [Kidman], Helen [Hunt] and Sally [Field]."

Next, the "Les Mis" star paid tribute to one of those women in particular. "Sally, I have to thank you so much for being a vanguard against typecasting, because as the girl who started out as the princess of Genovia [in the 'Princess Dairies'], I can't tell you how encouraging it was to know that the Flying Nun grew up to be Norma Rae and grew up to be Mama Gump [in 'Forrest Gump'] and grew up to be Mary Todd Lincoln [in 'Lincoln']," she said. "So thank you so much."

From there, the Golden Globe winner had a special message for another actress who shaped her performance in the role: her mom, Kate McCauley Hathaway, who also played Fantine in a stage version of "Les Mis" decades prior.

"OK, I'll wrap it up. I just want to thank my mother, who I saw perform this role when I was 8. I want to thank the creators of the show, Working Title and Universal for making an unapologetically sincere live-sung-through musical; I'm sure that was an easy decision. And I have to thank our cast, who are fearless and impossibly talented," she continued. "Our crew, who deserve an award for pretending that they liked live singing at 7 a.m., and Hugh Jackman, my friend, you are brilliant in this role. I love you.

"[Director] Tom Hooper, I will not damage your reputation as an aloof Englishman by telling everyone that when I was crying on set you were crying right along me. I won't tell anyone that. Your secret's totally safe with me. Thank you so much for everything you gave me," she added as the music played her offstage. "To my family and my husband. Honey, you make every day better than the last."

Hathaway will face off against Adams, Field and Hunt, as well as "Sliver Linings Playbook" actress Jackie Weaver, in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars come February.

First comes love, then comes marriage! Olivia Wilde has confirmed her engagement to "Saturday Night Live" star Jason Sudeikis.

On Sunday, she tweeted out the good news to her followers, writing, "Thanks for all the sweet congratulatory love, friends! And may I compliment your savvy use of that nifty engagement ring emoticon."

The engagement first made headlines on Saturday, when sources told People that they became engaged shortly after the holidays. "They are so excited," the source says. "And very, very happy."

Wilde and Sudeikis began dating in late 2011. This marks the second marriage for both actors. Wilde had previously been married to Tao Ruspoli, but the two went their separate ways in 2011. Meanwhile Sudeikis was previously married to "30 Rock" writer Kay Cannon.

A source tells Us Magazine that "they've both been married, so they've already experienced that and know what it entails."

"He finally found the one that made him want to commit," the source adds. "They've both been through it before and this has just felt right from the get-go. Everyone is happy for them."

The couple currently lives together in New York City. She opened up about their relationship to USA Today last October, noting that she'd love to one day add mom to her resume in addition to the future Mrs. Sudeikis.

"Yes, yes, absolutely. I think it would be great. My mom was a great example of having a professional life and having a kid. It can be done. No one is saying it's easy. But I'm totally inspired by the idea of being a badass working professional mom," she said. "I'm so into my dog. I can't imagine how I will smother my child."

Share your well-wishes for Sudeikis and Wilde below!

Oscar nominations have many of us scratching our heads this morning…

Oscar nominations have many of us scratching our heads this morning...

What a crazy morning. As Oscar tends to do, they delivered their annual “WTF?” but instead of them inserting their nominees, they took out the nominees. Insane. Simply insane. My reactions to the nominees are below: Best Picture • Amour • Argo • Beasts of the Southern Wild • Django Unchained • Les Miserables • Life of Pi • Lincoln • Silver Linings Playbook • Zero Dark Thirty I’m so happy I was wrong about Amour getting trumped by all the loud December openings. It’s well deserved. The only surprise (and to some it isn’t a surprise) is Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained making the cut here over Moonrise Kingdom, who many thought would make the cut. As we trickle down through every category, and if you already saw the Best Director lineup, this looks like a race between Lincoln, Life of Pi, and Silver Linings Playbook at this point. Prediction – 7 for 9 (missed Amour and Django for Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Moonrise, and The Master at #10) Predicted Winner – Lincoln Snub – Moonrise Kingdom, The Master, The Impossible Best Achievement in Directing • Michael Haneke – Amour • Ang Lee – Life of Pi • David O. Russell – Silver Linings Playbook • Steven Spielberg – Lincoln • Benh Zeitlin – Beasts of the Southern Wild I spoke about the possibility of Benh Zeitlin sneaking in for Best Director when DGA was announced and his film is a director’s type of film. What’s more insane is it came at the expense of three big Oscar favorites, Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow, and David O. Russell. When it comes to Affleck, I discussed back in November that Oscar may not have fully forgiven him or take him seriously yet as a director to be taken seriously here. It’s sad because he’s delivered three solid films under his directorial belt that are worthy of citation. I’m glad Argo managed the Picture nom though but George Clooney as a Producer probably had something to do with that more than Affleck. I can’t explain why Bigelow missed. Is it the woman card? The controversy surrounding the film at the moment? Not sure at all. Tom Hooper directing a musical and missing makes sense. They Academy at large doesn’t go all the way for musicals unless the Weinstein Company is pushing it or its 40 years ago. Congratulations Ang Lee, you are officially in the running to win your second Directing Oscar. Russell is in the heat of the race too. Can’t believe what we [...]

Trees and Branches Down in North Hollywood and Studio City Due to High Winds

Tree down at Radford and Kling.

Heavy wind gusts are expected to continue through Friday, and already some reports have occurred of trees down in the area.

A tree fell across Radford Avenue and Kling Street in Valley Village completely cross Radford (heading into Studio City). Police arrived at the scene just before noon about an hour after the eucalyptus tree crashed to the ground.

Branches also covered the streets in the Colfax Meadows area of Studio City, but were cleared off the road quickly. Another large branch hit a car in the Studio City hills just above Ventura Boulevard and Tujuna Avenue. Police said no injuries were reported due to winds.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning of strong and potentially damaging winds.

A cold low-pressure system brought rain, snow, high winds and pounding surf much of Thursday, less than a 10th of an inch in coastal and valley areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers were expected to continue through Friday morning, but accumulation was expected to add up only to one or two inches. It will be hazardous driving.

At the same time, temperatures were dropping precipitously, with highs expected to be in the 40s and 50s along the coast and in the valleys and the 20s and 30s in the mountains, NWS forecasters said.

Saturday morning is expected to be particularly cold, with temperatures dropping into the 20s in valley areas, "resulting in a potentially damaging freeze event," according to an NWS.

VIDEO: Pure Barre Kicks a Leg Up in Sherman Oaks

Patch stopped by the recently opened Pure Barre fitness studio at 13559 Ventura Blvd., to chat a little with Jamie Wells, owner of the Sherman Oaks business, and find out what's new and different about it.

This Pure Barre location actually shares an entryway with a yoga studio, and is nestled among a variety of specialty boutique storefronts and small eateries along this particular stretch of the boulevard. There's even a requisite Starbucks at the east end of the block, which should give a boost to its discovery.

Wells told Patch that she is a native "born and raised" Southern Californian.

Wells said the feelings she gets from her Pure Barre workouts conjure up good memories about being a cheerleader and dancer in high school, and a hip-hop dancer at UCLA. Nowadays, Wells said she mostly runs marathons and does yoga.

Wells said she was so inspired by her Pure Barre experience, that she wanted to bring it to her community. She said her facility has been only open for over a month, and she is seeing a good growth in membership.

Wells informed Patch that there are over a hundred franchise locations across the United States and that the company is still growing.

"It's a wonderful brand, a wonderful company, and we've been having a great time here in Sherman Oaks," Wells said.

Patch: How did you find out about Pure Barre?

Wells: So, I've always been into fitness, and I really love fitness. I do everything from running to kickboxing. I was in grad school and my friends actually introduced me to Pure Barre... (they) took me to Pure Barre and I just fell in love with it right from the get go. Just everything about it, the community aspect of it, the way you really work out your muscles with zero impact, essentially; and it kind of took me back to my days when I danced.

It's in a studio, it's amazing music, so it's a really a unique kind of workout that's really super-effective and different than anything else I had done before. I feel I have tried so many things in fitness, so it was a nice addition to my regimen.

Patch:  What's the difference between Pure Barre and other fitness studios?

Wells:  It's inspired by Pilates and a little bit of the ballet barre, obviously, but it utilizes small, isometric movements. Really focusing, targeting the muscle areas we all like to be more toned in, like the arms, back of the arms, abs, seat, thighs. Really we just focus on that, so it's really intense movements for those specific areas, but zero impact and really amazing music. I'd say the real difference is zero impact and really targeted focus.

Patch:  Is the ballet barre incorporated in all the exercises?

Wells:  Thigh exercises are at the barre... seat exercises are at the barre... so it's a mix, with most exercises at the barre, and the rest is floorwork.

Patch:  Who is the typical Pure Barre client?

Wells:  It's mainly geared toward women, although we do have men who come in, also. But it's anybody, really, who is looking to get more toned in those areas I talked about: the seat, abs, thighs and arms. A lot of women who've had babies, because it's very safe. You can do it through your pregnancy. Women who are getting married... really it's for anybody who wants to tone up.

Patch:  How are your customers discovering Pure Barre?

Wells:  The great thing about being a franchise is that it's a nationwide brand,  so a lot of women came in, and they had heard about it from a friend... word-of-mouth is really big. Just on the Internet, we've done a little bit of Facebook marketing, but really just through the brand, and people walking by. We have an established yoga place next door, so that helps out a lot.

Patch:  Do you have certain aspirations for your company?

Wells:  To know the community more...  draw more people into this amazing workout... and share the benefits.

UPDATED: Hollywood Fight Leads to Stabbing

Vehicle Strikes Pole, Knocks Down Phone Lines in Orangevale Jan. 9, 2013.

A man was recovering Thursday from three stab wounds inflicted during a group fight in Hollywood, police told Patch.

The melee among a "handful" of people occurred shortly after midnight Thursday on Hollywood Boulevard near Bronson Avenue, LAPD Lt. Marc Reina said.

Police in the area spotted a group fight, the lieutenant said, but when they approached the group, the scrap was just ending.

Police walked up to one man, who then realized he had been stabbed; he pointed out a suspect, Reina said.

The suspect ran off but was chased and quickly caught, Reina told Patch.

The 19-year-old suspect, was taken to a station for questioning and the 18-year-old victim was taken to a hospital, where he was expected to recover, police said.

Reina told Patch that the weapon used appeared to be a makeshift knife.

A motive for the stabbing was under investigation.

Coyotes Spotted in Toluca Lake: How to Keep the Wild Animals Away

A pair of wild coyotes.

A few of our readers recently said they spotted coyotes in West Toluca Lake, but some lessons I learned from my past job could help keep the wild animals away.

Reader Lisa Pano told Patch on Facebook that she spotted a coyote last Saturday at Kling Street and Bellflower Avenue around 10:30 p.m.

"It looked it had a small animal in its mouth and it ran down Sarah street, when I lost it. This is so very dangerous for our pets and neighbors," she wrote. "In 10 years of living in the area, I have never seen a coyote this far off from the canyons."

Resident John Chapman said he spotted coyotes on Hortense, Sarah, Kling and Blix streets on Sunday and Monday.

Before moving to North Hollywood-Toluca Lake Patch, I was the editor of Calabasas Patch, a community that reported many coyote encounters due to its proximity to park land and mountains.

Calabasas developed a coyote management plan, which indicated there's many steps people can take to prevent coyotes from roaming their neighborhoods. Here are some of their tips:

  • Keep your cat or small dog indoors at night or any other time when a coyote is known to be in the area
  • Accompany your small dog in a well lighted area at night for comfort walks
  • Walk your dog on a leash whenever you take it off of your property
  • Confine poultry and rabbits in covered enclosures constructed with heavy mesh wire. Coyotes can break through ordinary chicken wire
  • Keep all outdoor trash can lids securely fastened to trash containers
  • Pick backyard fruit as soon as it ripens and keep rotten fruit off the ground

And here's a few dont's:

  • Don't feed wild animals
  • Don't leave pet food outside, particularly at night
  • Don't allow pets to roam from home--especially at night.
  • Don't leave water bowls for pets outdoors
  • Don't leave garbage containers open
  • Don't leave water in birdbaths or bird seed outdoors for songbirds

Click here to read more about Calabasas' coyote management plan.

While in Calabasas, I also met Camila Fox, founder of Project Coyote, who said if someone encounters a coyote, they should be "big, bad and loud."

"[Coyotes] are social pack animals. If they feel that you're the dominant force out there, they will respond accordingly," she said.

Tricks as simple as shaking an empty soda can filled with coins could be enough to scare the wild animals off, Fox said.

In the city of Los Angeles, call (888) 452-7381 for non-lethal assistance.

You can call Los Angeles Animal Services when you spot a coyote, but have relevant information on hand when they call in. (Click here for the checklist.)

Destiny's Child Will Reunite For Beyonce's Super Bowl Halftime Performance

Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams will reportedly hit the stage with Beyonce to promote their new DC compilation album.
By Gil Kaufman

Destiny's Child

There's only one direction for the February 3 Super Bowl
to go: bigger. And apparently, that's just what it got.

You already knew that Beyoncé was going to rip it up
at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans during the halftime show. And that she's launched a contest inviting fans to get in on the action during the on-air introduction before the show.

But now, on the heels of Thursday's announcement that Destiny's Child will drop the compilation album Love Songs
on January 29 — including the newly recorded track "Nuclear" — Us Magazine has reported that DC will reunite onstage during the festivities.

According to the report, multiple sources close to the group said that Beyoncé will be joined on stage by DC mates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams during halftime for a medley of the group's hits that will culminate with "Nuclear."

The sources said Bey will open the show solo, then be joined by Williams and Rowland midway through for a run through their stellar catalog and the first new tune from them in more than eight years. If the reports are accurate, it will be their first live performance as a group since a farewell gig at the 2006 NBA All-Star game.

Beyonce will be joined by Katy Perry, Fun, Usher and Alicia Keys at President Obama's inauguration. Click here to find out who else will be performing!

The extravaganza will reportedly end with Beyoncé solo again for a finale that will include the as-yet-unannounced first single from her upcoming fifth solo album.

A spokesperson for DC could not be reached for confirmation of the halftime reunion gig at press time.

First look at Liam Neeson in Non-Stop

The first image has arrived online from Jaume Collet-Serra’s upcoming thriller Non-Stop, featuring Liam Neeson dusting off his badass routine once more.

Neeson plays Bill Marks, a former Air Marshal who has resigned himself to a no-thrills desk job, until one particular flight throws his peaceful new career completely out of whack.

Receiving a series of texts from an unknown aggressor, he is informed that unless $150m is transferred into a private account, passengers on his flight will begin dying at 20 minute intervals.

Naturally, Marks isn’t a man to take this lying down, and it isn’t long before all hell is breaking loose at 40,000 feet. And as you can see from the new image, he clearly hasn’t forgotten how to use a firearm…

Co-starring Scoot McNairy, Julianne Moore and Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery, Non-Stop will open in the UK later this year, with a specific release date yet to be confirmed.

Spielberg clarifies Robopocalypse status

Yesterday we reported that Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse had been delayed indefinitely, with word filtering out that the production had become too expensive to be practical.

However, Spielberg himself has clarified the situation, and it sounds as though we will actually be seeing the film after all, albeit a little further down the track.

““We found that the film was costing a lot of money,” says Spielberg, “and I found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally.

“I found the personal way into Robopocalypse, and so I just told everybody to go find other jobs. I’m starting on a new script and we’ll have this movie back on its feet soon.”

So there you have it, robot fans. The Beard isn’t giving up on his cybernetic chums, and neither should you…

Mark Millar talks Fantastic Four reboot

Mark Millar has never been one to shy away from an interview, and it seems that his new position as Fox’s creative consultant on all things Marvel has done little to dull his appetite for a soundbite.

Millar has been busy talking up the Fantastic Four reboot, revealing a few tidbits about the direction Josh Trank will be taking the franchise.

“From what I’ve seen and from talking to him - he and I have had dinner a couple of times and we talk quite regularly as well - he’s contemporizing it,” says Millar. “I think he’s just making it work for the screen - he’s a great storyteller.

“What I wasn’t expecting actually was just how funny and likeable he could make this as well as getting the more awesome moments on screen,” he continues. “I use awesome in the traditional British sense and not the California sense awesome, you know?

“The Ridley Scott moments, and the Fantastic Four really are jaw-dropping in the same way you feel when you saw Alien for the first time, there’s some moments in this - not to be specific - that are actually gonna be phenomenal on screen and stuff you haven’t seen in a superhero movie before.”

Fantastic Four will open in the US on 6 March 2015.

Golden Globes 2013 Predictions: Best Supporting Actress

Will Sunday finally be the night for awards hopeful Anne Hathaway?
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Anne Hathaway in "Les Miserables"
Photo: Universal Pictures

The story of this awards season thus far has been its unpredictability. Best Picture remains a toss-up with a slight advantage given to "Lincoln." Who knows what's going on with Best Director? And every acting category but one is set up for a potential shocker. Yes, in the realm of 2012 films awards, and specifically this Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, there is only one near certainty, the Best Supporting Actress category.

After begging and pleading for a nomination — and getting very naked in "Love and Other Drugs" — it appears Anne Hathaway's awards luck has finally turned. Her brief but potent performance as the tragic Fantine in "Les Misérables" has been the most talked-about female supporting role of the year and the most agreed-upon aspect in the mixed reviews for the mega-musical.

Her only competition could come in the form of Sally Field, who beat out Hathaway in a few critics' awards and could use her meatier role to sneak past the musical performance.

Who Should Win: For as often as Hathaway's awards aspirations are discussed, not enough attention has been paid to Amy Adams' rapidly expanding number of nominations. This year marks her fourth Globe and Oscar nominations, and while she didn't receive nearly as much buzz as her male co-stars, Adams' subtle, powerful performance in "The Master" deserves more recognition.

Who Will Win: Nicole Kidman in "The Paperboy." Just kidding. Expect this one to go to Hathaway, so prepare yourself for the hurricane force winds of emotion in that acceptance speech. There will be singing and at least one "dreamed a dream" pun.

Readers Share Their Favorite Huell Howser Memories

TV host Huell Howser died in his Palm Springs home the night of Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013. He was 67.

Informative, funny and iconic are some the words people are using to describe television host Huell Howser, who passed away Monday morning.

Patch asked Los Angeles-area readers on Facebook to share their favorite public landmark profiled on his public television shows and their memories of him. Below are some their responses.

Have your own Huell Howser memories and thoughts to share? Post them in the comment section.

Culver City

William Eichenberger - He went up into the Vets Park tower and talked about how it was built so fans could watch them film movies at MGM.

Mary McGrath - This is so sad....I loved his folksy charm. I was suspicious when I heard about his "retirement" and now I know why ...

    Sherman Oaks

Craig Au - in a town of few "local" celebrities, Huell Howser was one of L.A.'s best...his show, California Gold, was fun, funny, interesting, campy, factful and always entertaining...even if the subject was a tad dry, Huell, with his "golly gee" attitude and his"gun show" wrapped in a Polo shirt arms, always made it worth watching...and even when he interviewed the oddest people, he NEVER made fun of them...my own personal moment with Huell, standing at a mini-mall on La Brea and Franklin during the L.A. riots, chasing away looters while having a conversation for nearly an hour about how it tore him up to see "his" town this way...R.I.P. Mr. Howser.

    Arcadia

Nan Kemker - For almost two decades my family watched the documentaries of Mr. Huell Howser. He rated right up there with Disney. Our whole family watched him. The California missions were always my favorite. But all his shows were good. I NEVER saw a bad show...never. We will miss his travels and his unique way of talking so calm and relaxed. He came to one of the retirement homes in Azusa, CA one year and we got to see him in person. He's the only STAR I have seen that looked and acted exactly the same on TV and in person. Just an amazing man!!

Julie Harris - To be more specific... Huell Howser was the creator and host of a very iconic documentary show called " CALIFORNIA GOLD"! He traveled all of California to seek out our treasures that made California RICH in history! GOD BLESS YOU SIR! He loved our California and brought so much information to the public about California that otherwise we may never have known! He highlighted and brought recognition to founders, to rebels, to historians, creators, discoveries, landmarks, trend setters, people who paved the way for pioneers who built California! He had a great idea for a great way to bring the History Great and Small to all if us Californians. PBS was the station that you would have seen "CALIFORNIA GOLD" with HUELL HOWSER! A truly great man! I personally love and remember him meeting with Leo and Cleo STATERS!!! He met with other's too that had started company's in California! Taco Lita, Taco Bell! He also did a show on the professor at Riverside Community College that was in charge of agriculture and responsible for all the Orange Trees and Orange Groves in the San Bernardino County and Riverside County! I just can't remember his name. God bless him. But, he was a customer that came threw my store in Riverside every day on his way to work.

    Palos Verdes

Ellen November - His visit to the orchid nurseries in Santa Barbara. His genuine enthusiasm for everything!

Scott Bergonzi - i moved to the south bay a few years ago & caught him on KCET, a fan from the first episode i saw. i've learned bunches about CA from those videologs, enjoying some spots (even picking up some egg nog with his picture on the bottle this past holiday). i find it interesting whenever i mention his name to "locals", so few know who he is....a classic in bringing enthusiasm to CA history.

Willemina Diana Alvarez - I loved Huell Howser...I remember an episode that I started watching the middle of and I knew exactly where he was...Alondra Park! I practically lived there in the 50's and 60's (when I wasn't at the beach) I'm a native Californian and learned alot about our state from watching Huell~I miss miss him :(

Charles R. Eldred Jr. - I'm a transplant. His reports made me feel like a local. He was truly" *.*

    West Hollywood

Suzanne Lewis - So sad. An all around great guy and California icon. Rest in Peace Huell Howser. You will be missed

    South Pasadena

Johns Especial Ng - "that's amaaazing"

John A. Frye - Phillipe's downtown Los Angeles, was probably the first place I discovered by watching his show. Been there many many times since.

    Santa Monica

Dorsey Roe - This is so sad.

Al Loren Stone - LA Riots, a camera crew cruising down Hollywood Blvd. came upon a Huell Howser walking up and down the street carrying a baseball bat. He was just keeping the peace. Amazing.

    Eddie Wolf - Lost Treasure.

    Brentwood

Laurel Ray - I was so saddened by this news, Huell's enthusiasm was contagious, even about the smallest things. His programs were unlike any other and he will be missed.

    Redondo Beach

Jeremy Hutchings - We've lost an icon today. He will be missed by all he has touched during his broadcasting career.

Jim Kitchen - how did he pass?...sad..

    Montrose-La Crescenta

Dale Frey - He was a great guy and really a legend in the field of making people and everyday news be appreciated....he will not be every replaced as he was a classic and true california gold!!!!

Jenna Kane Harkins - I grew up watching California's Gold and my favorite was the episode he did on the wisteria vine in Sierra Madre in the 80's. I thought it was great to see something on TV that featured the town I grew up in and lived in for 23 years! Many funny memories of always trying to impersonate him and his voice! Sad loss for our state.

Kendor Nishio - I too grew up watching him. There was a point in time were I did not miss a single episode. To this day my favorite season is when he did the california missions. It inspired me to write my first report.

Katie Emery - I loved his In & Out show -it was the first one I showed to my son and now he always orders off the secret menu!

    Monrovia

Alma de Hoyos - His special on the U.S.S. Midway and the U.S.S. Hornet was amazing. That was the reason my honey and I were in San Francisco.

    Marina Del Rey

Marge McDowell - Wow...that's a shock. I just watched the two-part story he did 20 years on Moscow. It's hard to pick just one local story, he did so many.

    Manhattan Beach

Jennifer Shepard Camacho - As a former fourth grade teacher, his California Gold videos were a great extension to our CA history lessons. They always enriched our curriculum.

Margo Thole - I was always impressed that people weren't awkward or camera shy upon having his microphone thrust in their faces. He could call any bystander to the camera and immediately they were disarmed. he brought out the best in everyone.

    Glendora

Debra June Dickson - My husband met him a few years ago. They talked for 10 mins. The way he was on Calif. Gold is the real man he was. We will miss him.

Laura Bryant Alexander - I know a lot of people have already mentioned this, but his enthusiasm for EVERYTHING was so infectious! I loved how he found something fascinating about each thing that he was shown as he toured the state.

Melons R Sweet - I will remember his very distinctive voice. I always loved to watch his adventures through California. I really learned a lot of California history from his shows. May he R.I.P.

    Beverly Hills

David Louis Burstein - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wQ5frcmMJk Obviously, the lint lady!

Maureen Elizabeth - He interviewed my sister in law at Dodger Stadium at the first game after 9-11. That was my favorite memory of him.

    North Hollywood-Toluca Lake

Joanna Massie Stein - The show on In-N-Out was my most favorite of all time.

David Park - The show where he was exploring a silver mine. The docent said to not touch the walls but it was too late. He looked back at the camera, showed his messy hand then wiped it off on the back of her windbreaker. Also, my brother and I got a kick out of him being a top of CA's tallest bridge. He asked everybody who passed by if they knew they were crossing the tallest bridge. He was so excited! R.I.P.

Cyndie Tee - The show where he was in my hometown of Colton and he was at El Rancho restaurant.

Nereida Ojedas - THE SHOW WHERE HE WAS I BELEIVE IN los angeles sports arena in a lowrider show..lol and the one with broguieres milk farm...alot of hiepisodes were fantastic!

Dalida Ohanian - My favorite was when he showcased http://www.nethercuttcollection.org/ I had no idea such a place existed in town. We went there shortly after and the place is gorgeous.

Kelly Supple - The Folsom Dam episode that just aired this weekend. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, but move to Folsom, CA a few years ago. He brought a local landmark, near my new home, to life for me. So sorry to hear of his passing.

    Encino-Tarzana

Staci Terrace Goldfarb - So many great shows, I watch all the time with my kids!

    La CaƱada-Flintridge

Ted Jordan - Huell Howser was great. He will be missed. I loved the time they showed him climbing Half Dome at Yosemite.

First official image from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games exceeded all expectations at the box office (coming third in terms of US grosses in 2012) and made us remember that teen-lit adaptations could actually be cool.

Much of its success was down to Jennifer Lawrence steely Katniss, the kind of tough-edged heroine too rarely seen these days.

Anticipation is mounting for the sequel, official titled The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and a first official still has been revealed via EW.com’s Facebook page.

The image sees Sam Claflin’s Finnick Odair (famed as much for his good looks and charm as for his prowess in the arena) getting close to Katniss, although she doesn't look as if she's been won over just yet.

Check out the image in full below:

Catching Fire sees the districts of Panem preparing for the 75th Annual Hunger Games. As it’s a ‘quarter quell’ (read ‘quarter century’) celebration, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) has something particularly nasty up his velvet sleeve.

    The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
opens in the UK on 22 November 2013. We’re pretty sure the odds are in this one’s favour…

Resurrecting 'The Deep Throat Sex Scandal' for the West Coast

The guy who played squeaky-clean Peter Brady in The Brady Bunch was off in the corner talking to legendary adult film star Nina Hartley. At the other end, Oscar-nominated actress Sally Kirkland was sharing a laugh with funnyman Bruce Vilanch, who won Emmys for writing the Oscars.

It was an odd lot gathered this week at the Zephyr Theatre on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood.

“We’re here to make a little history, and without you all here, we couldn’t tell this important story,” said the ringleader David Bertolino. "Thank you for being brave enough to be a part of it."

He is the man who spent years researching and interviewing people involved with the controversial film Deep Throat, and then wrote and produced a play  about it off-Broadway in New York two years ago called The Deep Throat Sex Scandal. Now, Bertolino is bringing the play home to California.

“Maybe I did it a bit backwards, because the adult industry is based out here in California, but we just wanted to get it on the stage and see what people think,” Bertolino said.

Ron Jeremy, one of the biggest names in porn, who served as a consultant and will perform a cameo in the West Coast show, said, “This is a way to bring a whole new audience to discover the importance of Deep Throat.” He, Vilanch, Knight and porn legend Bill Margold will alternately play the conservative Southern judge that heard the case trying to prosecute Deep Throat and trying to define obscenity.

"Who wants other people to tell us what we're allowed to watch or not?" Vilanch said. "I'm thrilled to be a part of this. It's an important story."

Bertolino, a native of the Boston area, now lives in Studio City and is entranced with what he calls “The Gone With the Wind of porn.” He explained, “Before Deep Throat was released in 1972, adult entertainment was all short 15-minute loops. This movie had locations, and a script. It was an adult movie that couples went to, not just men in raincoats.”

The 58-year-old Bertolino recalled the controversy about the film when the Nixon administration was trying to prosecute the case, but he didn’t see the movie until much later when it was playing in a double-feature with The Devil and Miss Jones and he went to see it with an older woman. Now, the starlet of that movie, Georgina Spelvin is another one of the famous cameos who will performing in his play.

“Georgina is wonderful and still sexy and beautiful, and she said this would be her last public appearance,” Bertolino said.

Bertolino is mostly fascinated with the showmanship of Deep Throat promotions—a one-hour movie that cost $22,500 to make and brought in more than $600 million. Bertolino created Spooky World in New Hampshire after he bought a five-bedroom farmhouse and barn on five acres for $170,000. He got the PBS reality show This Old House to come to do free renovations and he collected horror movie memorabilia to show. It was an instant success, opening with more than 2,000 attendees on the first day.

Spooky World brought Bertolino out to the Hollywood Collector shows held regularly at the Beverly Garland Hotel in Studio City. That’s where he met Butch Patrick, who played Eddie Munster in The Munsters TV show and horror movie stars that he showcased at Spooky World, which he has since sold.

Now, he is looking for a permanent home in the Sherman Oaks, Valley Village or Studio City area because he likes the area so much. He enjoys the Ventura Boulevard restaurants, the Cardio Barre workout gym and other places in the area.

It was at a Las Vegas convention for lingerie where he met Ray Pistol who owns the rights to Deep Throat. Bertolino designed a nurse’s outfit and was asked to put Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace’s name on it.

“I found out about the movie,” Bertolino said. “I found out that no one went to see the movie when it first came out and then they paid people to stir up trouble and create publicity for them.”

And so, he has a giant blow-up giraffe outside the Deep Throat sign outside the theater. He also has plans to hire protestors to picket the play much like people picketed the movie. (See the videos above of Bertolino and the giraffe.)

Bertolino’s wife Linda wasn’t thrilled about his obsession with the project at first. “You have to realize that we were associated for so long with Spooky World that was a family place where Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts used to go to, so it took her a little while to get used to it,” said Bertolino, who also has a teenaged son. “But they get it now.”

After creating a thick script from news articles, court transcripts, interviews and Freedom of Information requests, Bertolino latched up with New York director Jerry Douglas. The most award-winning director and screenwriter in the gay adult industry, Douglas jumped at being involved with the project.

“I massaged the script a little and cut it down,” said Douglas, a gentle man with a baseball cap on all the time, and a cigarette when he can. “There was a lot of great research material that David came up with.”

Douglas said, “It is such an important story that is as timely now as ever. It is historic, it is poignant and it is very funny.”

There is nudity, both male and female, although no explicit sex acts, Bertolino said. “It is amazing how professional the actors are who came out to audition for the roles, and they have all really stepped up to be a part of this,” he added.

Harry Reems is played by Marc Ginsburg and Linda Lovelace is portrayed by Natasha Charles Parker, and the part of the attorney is played by Frank Blocker, who is the only cast member who was in the New York show.

Adult film stars Veronica Hart and Herschel Savage are part of the on-going, eight-actor company.

Savage, who plays the director of the movie, said, “I knew all the people in real life, and this story follows it all pretty accurately.”

The doors open to the public on Jan. 24 with tickets at $34. There is a special Guilty Pleasure ticket for $90 that offers a goody-bag of items from the Hustler store, a movie poster and a VIP reception with the stars after the show.

A special for Patch and Huffington Post readers allows a 50 percent discount on the Guilty Pleasure tickets by using the special code: LOVELACE when ordering.

The different guest cast members every week include: Amber Lynn and Bill Margold (January 24-27) Sally Kirkland and Bruce Vilanch (January 31-February 3) Nina Hartley and Christopher Knight (February 7-10) Georgina Spelvin and Ron Jeremy (February 14-17).
