Every year, as soon as the final list of Academy Award nominations finally sees the light of day, there are simultaneous races to broadcast both the list of names that made the cut and the ones that didn't.

For the 85th annual Academy Awards, the shockers came when contenders considered sure bets failed to make the nomination list. Neither Kathryn Bigelow nor Ben Affleck scored nominations for helming their big awards contenders, "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Argo," respectively.

Check out our list of the biggest Oscars surprises and snubs below!

Surprises

"Beasts of the Southern Wild"
Largely considered to be just outside the serious awards conversation, the Sundance hit had an enormous showing this morning. Not only did "Beast of the Southern Wild" collect the Best Picture nomination that some pundits predicted, but also a Best Directing nod for first-time feature director Benh Zeitlin and a Best Actress nomination for 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis, one of the youngest nominees ever.

"Amour"
Michael Haneke's tale of love and aging collected critics' awards for Best Picture throughout the fall, enough to make a Best Picture nomination a foregone conclusion, but the Best Director nomination shook up many prediction lists, which saw nods coming to some of our snubs.

Snubs

No Ben Affleck for Best Director
The actor-turned-director started awards season as a potential favorite in category, but now he's leaving without even a nomination. Affleck's third directorial effort has been widely considered his best to date and likely the one to score him his first directing nomination and his first since winning Best Original Screenplay in 1998 for "Good Will Hunting."

No Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director
Perhaps the biggest gasp of the morning came during the Best Director category, specifically once people realized that previous winner, Kathryn Bigelow, did not make the cut for her controversial "Hurt Locker" follow-up, "Zero Dark Thirty." Like Affleck, Bigelow was considered a possible winner in the category, considering that her film has largely cleaned up on the early awards circuit.

No "Skyfall" Nomination In Major Categories
The 23rd film in the James Bond series and the one that marks the 50th anniversary of the franchise was predicted by some to be the movie that broke the Academy's long-standing indifference to it. While "Skyall" did manage to score nominations in the technical categories and give Adele her first Academy Award nomination, hopes of a James Bond Best Picture nomination are long gone. Though that may have always been a stretch, a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Javier Bardem was certainly in the cards and made for one of the morning's more surprising snubs.

Major "Django Unchained" Oversights
Though we'll happily take a second Christoph Waltz nomination for work in a Quentin Tarantino movie, it's odd to see neither Leonardo DiCaprio nor Samuel L. Jackson make the short list for their impressive work in "Django Unchained." Additionally, the Best Song category, save the Adele nomination, largely ignored the popular artists up for the award. One of the biggest oversights was the snubbing of Rick Ross and Jamie Foxx for their contribution to the "Django Unchained" soundtrack, "100 Black Coffins."
