Gun Buyback Nets More Than 2,000 Firearms

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck inspect some of the firearms netted at Wednesday's gun buyback.

City officials announced on Thursday that the gun buyback held the day before netted 2,037 weapons, while they also warned revelers who own firearms not to shoot into the sky on New Year's Eve.

The buyback on Wednesday collected 901 handguns, 698 rifles, 363 shotguns and 75 assault weapons from people who dropped off the weapons in exchange for $100 and $200 Ralphs gift cards. The drop-off locations were set up at the Los Angeles Sports Arena and Van Nuys Masonic Temple.

The event is typically held on Mother's Day Weekend, but Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa moved the date up in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting tragedy in Newtown, CT, that left 20 children and seven adults dead, along with the gunman.

At a news conference Thursday morning at the Los Angeles Police Department's downtown headquarters, Villaraigosa was flanked by tables covered with surrendered firearms, including rifles illegally modified or illegally brought into California from other states, said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck.

"I and a lot of people who are here today understand how important it is for us to ensure that people have an opportunity to do something," he said.

The mayor also responded to critics of gun buybacks who say people mostly turn in broken firearms rather than weapons likely to be used in crimes.

"These weren't guns some say aren't functioning any longer," Villaraigosa said, "these are serious guns, semi-automatic weapons, guns that have no place on the streets of L.A. or any other city."

Ralphs and the California Wellness Foundation provided $130,000 worth of gift cards for the buyback, while City Controller Wendy Greuel garnered an additional $15,000 in private donations, the mayor said.

The response for the buyback was bigger than expected and police ran out of gift cards. Villaraigosa said 166 people gave up their weapons without accepting gift cards in return.

Gun buybacks in Los Angeles began in 2009 as an effort to reduce gun violence. Since then, more than 9,000 firearms have been surrendered and gun crimes have dropped about 33 percent, Villaraigosa said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and other law enforcement officials came to the news conference to remind gun owners not to fire their weapons into the night sky as part of their New Year's Eve celebrations.

Newly-elected Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said someone doesn't have to be struck by a falling bullet in order for a shooter to be prosecuted for firing a gun into the air.

"Merely shooting a gun in a reckless manner that could result in a person being struck is a crime in and of itself," she said.

Discharging a firearm into the air is a felony punishable by a year in prison.

Beck said one person in the city of Los Angeles was injured by a falling bullet on last New Year's Eve, and he urged people to celebrate responsibly.

"Spend New Year's Eve with your families, spend New Year's Eve with friends," Beck said. "Don't spend it in my jail or Lee Baca's jail.

"If you fire into the air, that's my promise to you, you will get to spend the new year in the big house."

Toast the 2013 New Year With a Bottle of Champagne

A glass of holiday bubbly.

The pop of the Champagne cork is as much a part of the New Year’s Eve soundtrack as "Auld Lang Syne" and fireworks. The tiny, tickling bubbles evoke celebratory moods.

But choosing the appropriate sparkling wine for New Year's Eve can make you dizzy before the first sip.

With so many sparkling wines to choose from, picking the best bottle can be daunting. Prices for sparkling wine range from less than $10 to more than $500 per bottle. Keep in mind that while you usually get what you pay for, there are some great options for those of us on a budget.

Large “negociant” champagne houses that purchase much of their fruit, such as Veuve Clicquot, Bollinger, Roederer, Taittinger, Perrier Jouet and Nicolas Feuillatte, dominate the market. However, in the last decade or so, Champagne from small growers has gained some traction with Champagne enthusiasts.

Only sparkling wine from the French region of Champagne can be labeled Champagne. But that doesn’t mean that quality sparkling wine can’t be produced in other parts of France and around the world.

Cremant from Burgundy, Limoux or the Loire Valley, Prosecco from Italy, Cava from Spain, and sparkling wine from Argentina and the U.S. West Coast deliver quality, value-driven sparklers.

Prosecco is chiefly grown in Italy’s Veneto region. It is vinified like Champagne. Unlike Champagne, Prosecco can deliver quality under $20.

For luxurious vintage Prosecco, the 2009 Bisol Cartizze is an elegant, floral sparkler with layers of citrus fruit, citrus rind, stone fruits and lithe minerality.

In its native Spain, Cava is the drink of choice on Christmas Eve. It is so value-driven that you can buy enough Cava for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

In the end, if you are looking to celebrate the New Year in style, Salon is, shall we say, the Champagne of Champagnes. Or, for a kid-friendly New Year's, try sparkling apple cider.

If you are looking for delicious options on a budget, try one of these five champagnes for less than $20:

1. François Labet ($17) Burgandy, France

2. Boeckel ($16) France

3. Codorníu Cuvée Raventos ($14) Spain

4. Martini and Rossi ($12) Italy

5. Kupferberg Gold ($9) Germany

Where's the best place in Hollywood to buy bubbly? Tell us in comments.

First clip from Seth Rogen’s This Is The End: watch now

This Is The End, Seth Rogen’s directorial debut, has released a first clip and poster, featuring Rogen and James Franco introducing their new film in the context of the impending Mayan apocalypse.

As it happens, the film itself is about an apocalyptic event, with Rogen and a whole host of his comedy buddies playing themselves as the world goes to hell in a handcart.

This first clip features Danny McBride pitching up to meet the boys (Rogen, Franco, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson and Jonah Hill), and struggling to compute the exact gravity of the situation.

Take a look, below:

It’s an odd concept for sure, but there’s definitely plenty to be enjoyed here, particularly McBride’s reaction to the news that Michael Cera is dead…

Co-directed by Evan Goldberg and also featuring appearances from Jason Segel, Paul Rudd and Emma Watson, This Is The End will open in the UK on 28 June 2013. Assuming we get that far, of course.

OSCARS Q&A: Anthony Hopkins

David Mermelstein is an AwardsLine contributor. Anthony HopkinsWhen we think of Anthony Hopkins, psychopaths may spring to mind. After all, the Welsh actor won an Oscar in 1992 for playing Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, a career-defining role. But of course there’s much more to Hopkins than playing brilliant fictional villains. He’s also displayed a knack for portraying complicated historical figures. In addition Hitchcockto playing Hitler (on TV) and William Bligh, the actor has earned Oscar nominations for playing the lead in Oliver Stone’s Nixon (1995) and John Quincy Adams in Steven Spielberg’s Amistad (1997). Now, Hopkins has assumed the role of Alfred Hitchcock in Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock, which chronicles the development and making of Psycho. AwardsLine: What attracted you to playing Alfred Hitchcock? Anthony Hopkins: The project originally came to me eight years ago. I met the two producers and thought, Yes, it’s interesting. But who wants to see a film about Alfred Hitchcock? Plus, I didn’t want to put on weight, having just gotten fit. So it never happened. But then it came back around. Sacha Gervasi now had it, and he had such passion and blatant enthusiasm for it. He had no experience directing actors, and I thought that would be a challenge. So I decided to just jump in. Related: ‘Hitchcock’ Opens AFI Fest, Starts Oscar Talk AwardsLine: Was it ... Quentin Tarantino talks Inglourious Basterds spin-off Killer Crow

With Django Unchained set to hit UK screens in a matter of weeks, Quentin Tarantino has been talking about another period drama he’s got on the boil, in the form of Inglourious Basterds spin-off, Killer Crow.

“My original idea for Inglourious Basterds way back when,” explains QT, “was that this [would be] a huge story that included the [smaller] story that you saw in the film, but also followed a bunch of black troops, and they had been fucked over by the American military and kind of go apeshit.”

“The black troops go on an Apache warpath and kill a bunch of white soldiers and white officers on a military base and are just making a warpath to Switzerland. So that was always going to be part of it, and I was going to do it as a miniseries, and that was going to be one of the big storylines.”

“When I decided to try to turn it into a movie, that was a section I had to take out to help tame my material. I have most of that written. It’s ready to go; I just have to write the second half of it…That would be the third of the trilogy. It would be called Killer Crow or something like that.”

Meanwhile, the next part of the “trilogy”, Django Unchained, will be arriving in UK cinemas on 18 January 2013.

'Django Unchained': Jonah Hill's Cameo Explained

Director Quentin Tarantino shifted the film's production dates to accommodate Hill's busy schedule.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Photo: The Weinstein Company

Quentin Tarantino has always been known to throw a random cameo or two into his films, especially when it comes to comedians. So it may or may not have come as a surprise to moviegoers when Jonah Hill appeared briefly as an idiotic Klan member in "Django Unchained."

The story behind Hill's appearance, as MTV News' Josh Horowitz found out when speaking with the actor, almost never happened, but his appreciation of Tarantino's film ultimately saved his role in the movie.

It all began back in 2010, when Tarantino listed Hill's film "Cyrus" as one of his top 10 of the year. Hill approached the filmmaker to thank him. "I saw him at some award show and I went up to him and thanked him. 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Goodfellas' are the two films that made me want to make films, so I just told him how much it meant to me that he had seen a movie that I was in. He's very approachable, Quentin, and he'll talk to you," Hill said. "He's seen every movie, even the sh---y movies you've made. He's seen them all and knows every moment from them. He's such a cinephile, and he's really approachable and easy to talk to, which makes him great."

That conversation was what eventually lead to Tarantino offering Hill a role in "Django Unchained," but the appearance almost didn't happen because of Hill's busy schedule. "I almost couldn't do the film because of scheduling," Hill said. "I wrote him a letter saying how sad I was, which ended up moving him to move the dates for me because he was moved by my letter, that was very personal, about how much his films mean to me. It was so nice that he rearranged it so I can be in the film."

The appearance is unusually short for an actor of Hill's stature, but he wasn't worried, considering what Tarantino has done in the past with one-scene performances. "As an actor, you worry, 'Is it weird for me to do one scene in a film?' When I take off my hood, I feel like people do go, 'Oh.' There's recognition that I wasn't in the rest of the film, and then all of a sudden in the film," Hill said. "Then I was thinking about Christopher Walken's scene in 'Pulp Fiction.' It's one of my favorite one-scene parts, if not my favorite, so if there was ever a director to do that for, it was Quentin. [It's] not like there was a choice in my head, whether to do this or not."

Oscars: The race is growing tighter!

Oscars: The race is growing tighter!

The race is growing tighter as some critics overlook certain titles for others. After countless awards in several film festivals, the race is growing tighter as some critics overlook certain titles for others. Less seasoned in the world of Oscars and festivals, I got really confused when it came to determining how to view each win and nomination. So I converted everything into numbers and found everything much easier to understand. Here are my findings. (*Warning: This is just speculation based on the percent of wins in the nominations listed in the AwardsCircuit predictions and, to make it simpler, I didn’t factor in time and theaters.) Though , ‘Argo‘ leads the number of wins count, these numbers are only relative if you have a base to compare them. By weighing the number of wins against the number of nominations, a percent can be drawn from the results. That puts ‘Argo‘ at, roughly, 41% as the Golden Globes approach, just behind ‘Amour‘ at 56% and ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ at 51%. ‘Life of Pi‘ follows at 31%, ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘ at 29%, ‘Lincoln‘ at 25%, and ‘Les Miserables‘ at 24% . From the sidelines, ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘, once considered the dark horse of the 2013 Oscars, fits snugly between ‘Beasts‘ and ‘Life of Pi‘ at 47%, continuing to do very well in the film festivals, as one of the most discussed films due to the controversy it raises wherever it goes. 'Django Unchained': The 'Despicable' Inside Story Of Samuel L. Jackson's Role

Actor shares his experience of being one-half of a 'two-headed monster' in Quentin Tarantino's latest.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Quentin Tarantino's latest film, "Django Unchained," has already made a number of headlines for being unlike any Western or any film depicting slavery that the world has ever seen. Part of that uniqueness is found in the characters and their place in that dark period of history.

However, no character is as controversial as Samuel L. Jackson's Stephen. In a film that clearly makes a statement about the white aristocracy of the pre-Civil War South, it's Stephen that emerges as one of the most evil characters.

To find out the story behind Stephen, MTV News' Josh Horowitz spoke with Jackson about accepting the role and working through the difficult material.

"Years ago, I would have said I was going to be the hero or Django, but [Tarantino] took too long to write it," Jackson said. "When he sent it to me, he said read the role of Stephen. I read it and was like, 'Oh, you really want me to be the most despised Negro in cinematic history?' 'Well, yeah.' 'OK, I'm down. Let's do it.' "

Aside from the character's complex emotional nature, Jackson also had to work on the physicality of Stephen, who is much older than Jackson. To get a head start on the look, Jackson began experimenting with makeup while working on "The Avengers." He would work through different types of looks with hairstyles, skin colors and applications until he achieved the right combination.

"We finally narrowed it down to about four things, so when I got to New Orleans, we tested all four things," Jackson said. "None of them worked separately, so we started to mix and match the pieces until we found the perfect match of all of them that would be efficient for everyday application."

On set, Jackson was able to turn his focus away from the look of Stephen and concentrate on his character's most important relation, Calvin Candie, the evil plantation owner played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Since the role was so different for DiCaprio, it took some time to find his comfort zone.

"Once [DiCaprio] got comfortable with the language and the convention of what it was, we're like, 'Yo, man. Step into space. Don't be afraid.' Because he's like, 'Do you really have to go this far?' and we're like, 'Yes, you do.' You got to say it. You got to do it. You got to believe it. You got to own it. Once he owned it, it was great," Jackson said. "The whole repartee between he and I started to play out when we were doing rehearsals. I was experimenting one day, and I just decided to repeat the last word he said, every time he said something to see what that felt like. Quentin fell in love with it, fell on the floor laughing, so we just kind of kept that stuff."

Ultimately, it's the relationship between Stephen and Calvin that proves to be the greatest enemy for Django, so establishing a strong rapport between Jackson and DiCaprio became a high priority.

"At a certain point, the whole story is that fable that Christoph tells Jamie about Broomhilda and Siegfried and that whole thing, the mountain, the dragon, the damsel in distress. Slavery becomes the mountain," Jackson said. "The dragon becomes Calvin Candie and Stephen, so I'm standing behind him sometimes being the power behind the throne. He's in the chair. It's almost like there's a two-headed monster there, messing with him."

Check out everything we've got on "Django Unchained."

New California Laws to Affect Drivers in 2013

Gavel

The new year is almost here and with it comes the resolution, a promise to change the way we've done things in the past.

The state of California has made several resolutions herself and we've decided to focus on the ones that affect drivers.

Below is a list of new laws or changes to existing laws that go into effect on Tuesday and will likely affect you as a California driver.

  • Passenger Charter-party Carriers’ Act, AB 45: Any driver of a chartered limo or bus will be required to make sure that passengers are of the legal drinking age when alcohol is being consumed in their vehicle. If a minor is found to have been drinking alcohol during the ride, the driver is required to return that passenger to where they were picked up.
  • CHP Silver Alerts, SB 1047: The California Highway Patrol will implement a "silver alert" into its emergency alert system to allow it to assist in searches for missing people over the age of 65.

How will these laws affect you? Tell us in the comments section below.

  • Autonomous Vehicles, SB 1298: The law will allow for self-driving cars to be test-driven on public roads while a licensed driver is in the driver's seat. The driver will be able to take over immediate manual control in the event of vehicle failure or some other emergency.
  • Used Car Dealer Practices, AB 1534, AB 1447: Under AB 1534, used car dealers that provide direct financing to buyers must label their cars with specific information about them, including reasonable market value and the source of the information. AB 1447 will require these dealers provide a vehicle warranty, limit them from tracking customer vehicles with GPS devices and prevent them from being able to electronically disable a vehicle without signed consent from the buyer at the time of purchase.
  • Hands-Free Text and Driving, AB 1536: The law will allow a person to send and receive text messages while driving if they are doing so using a phone's hands-free, voice-operated functions.
  • Veteran License Plates, AB 1550: Veterans will be able to apply for specialized plates designating them as participants of specific wars or conflicts with the use of new decals. Old decals will be phased out depending on demand and cost of production.
  • California Legacy Plates, AB 1658: Drivers whose cars are registered in California will be able to opt for specialized license plates that look similar to plates used in the state in past years.
  • Traffic Violator School, AB 1888: The law will allow a driver with a commercial license who has committed a traffic offense to attend traffic violator school, thus preventing them from getting a point on their license.
  • Driving Under the Influence, AB 2020: A person arrested for suspected DUI will no longer be given the option of a urine test. In previous years, the option was given of either a urine test or a blood test.
  • Choose Clean Cars Act, AB 2405: Vehicles that meet California's super ultra-low emissions standards may qualify for stickers which will allow for single-driver travel in high-occupancy vehicle lanes.
  • Vessel Registration Fees, AB 2443: The registration fee for boat owners will increase to support the monitoring and infestation prevention of dreissenid mussels, which attach to the bottoms of boats.

Meek Mill And Cassidy: Road To A Rumble

After trading words on Twitter for months, Meek Mill finally responds to Cassidy with 'Repo' dis track.
By Nadeska Alexis

Meek Mill's "Repo" cover art
Photo: MMG

A few months ago Meek Mill scoffed at the thought of engaging in a rap battle with Cassidy, but apparently a little provocation goes a long way. On Wednesday night, the MMG rapper directed the dis track "Repo" at his fellow Philly native, and it looks like this war is ready to rage on.

The contention between the two rappers, and former collaborators, took root back in July when Cassidy began to retweet fans who wondered why he and Meek had not recorded since his career began to skyrocket with MMG. Meek, immediately offended by the implication, tossed some words at Cassidy. "U on some clown sh-- right now," he wrote. "Just say it 2 my face... I'm always home... Y'all b getting beside y'all self with this send button don't confuse this twitter wit real life... #hating."

Things died down after that, but then some twisted words added fuel to the fire again in November. During an interview, Meek admitted that he would love to see Cassidy battle with Murda Mook, and that was misconstrued into news that Meek wanted to face off with Cassidy. Cassidy wasted no time accepting the non-offer, but Meek wasn't having any of it. "Man I said I wanted mook & cassidy to battle.... Mook the king of that sh-- to me!" he wrote. "I'm not battling none of these n---as thats not popping! I'm popping some of these n---as gotta pay me 2 do dat!"

Someone actually did offer to pay them to battle, $100, 000 to be exact, but still Meek wasn't really into it. Cassidy's response? "I paved the way for these dudes.. N---as is scared! That would be the easiest 100k I ever made in my life.. It's like taking candy from a baby..." The shots then continued, with Meek trashing one of Cassidy's most popular hits. "You can't pave the way wit 'come 2 my hotel' @CASSIDY_LARSINY."

With Meek still trying to distance himself, Cassidy got things started with the possible dis track "The Diary of a Hustla" in mid-November, followed by the definite dis track "Condom Style" a month later. Meek took to Instagram to trash the record, calling it, "the worst song in the history of rapping," which prompted Cassidy to hit back with "Me, Myself & iPhone" this weekend. Finally, that seemed to be the tipping point for Meek. On December 22, the Dreams and Nightmares rapper responded, "Listening 2 this diss..... Ima say cuz you lost ya mind! U really gone up top mentally ...... I feel sorry for u! Lol," and followed up with his own jabs on "Repo."

As it stands, it's Cassidy's turn to respond, and fans seem to be throwing equal support behind both rappers.

Authorities Issue Guidelines for Rose Parade-Goers

Family members—or volunteers—walking toward the enclosed area where the 2012 Rose Parade floats will be decorated right through the New Year.

With tens of thousands of people expected to camp out Monday night for prime Rose Parade spots, Pasadena police and fire officials issued a list of guidelines to keep parade-goers safe and within the law.

Among the rules and regulations governing parade goers are:

-- Overnight camping is permitted Monday night only.

-- A permanent spot on a sidewalk can be kept by standing vigil, starting at noon Monday. The traditional Rose Parade "blue line" along the street is the honor line. People and their belongings must remain on the curb until 11 p.m. Monday, when they can move to the honor line.

-- Small grills must be kept at least a foot off the ground are must be 25 feet from buildings and other combustible items. Those cooking along the parade route need to have a fire extinguisher and water on hand.

-- People younger than 18 are allowed along the parade route between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. only if with an adult.

-- Overnight campers should dress for the cold. Children and senior citizens should overdress, in layers, to guard against hypothermia.

-- Stay hydrated and eat regularly to avoid becoming dehydrated.

-- Report any suspicious activities or unattended packages to authorities along the parade route.

-- In case of emergency, call (626) 744-4241 from a cell phone, or 911 from a land line and be ready to give a location.

Things that are banned along the parade route include:

-- tents, sofas and boxes that an be used as stools or seats;

-- unoccupied chairs;

-- bonfires; and

-- fireworks, except as part of scheduled official events.

City and parade officials also noted that no people or groups can march in the parade unless they have been approved by the Tournament of Roses.

Items may not be sold along the parade route without a permit, and no public areas -- sidewalks, curbs, gutters, streets -- can be cordoned or roped off. It is also illegal to buy, sell or give away horns on the parade route, and selling space along the route is illegal.

Pets are not recommended because they are easily frightened by sudden, loud noises.

Spectators also may not throw any projectiles into the parade, including seemingly harmless items such as tortillas, marshmallows or flowers.

Vehicles obstructing emergency lanes will be towed, and walking in the street is not permitted during the parade. Open containers of alcohol are illegal on public streets, sidewalks or other areas.

Because of large crowds, police will resolve any problems quickly and remove from the scene anyone who violates the law or disturbs the peace.

During the parade, it is typical for the Pasadena Fire Department to respond to more than twice the number of normal calls because of hypothermia, illegal burning, miscellaneous medical issues, assaults and alcohol-related matters.

Bradley Cooper Talks Life and Career with The Hollywood Reporter: Watch Here!

While Oscar buzz continues to swirl around his performance in "Silver Linings Playbook," Bradley Cooper sat down with Scott Feinberg from The Hollywood Reporter to talk about his life and career. Check out highlights from the interview below.

On his professional acting start upon moving to New York City: "I was very lucky. I didn't realize how lucky. I was working as a doorman and I booked a pilot before I booked 'Sex & the City.' It was 'Wall-to-Wall Records' with Beau Bridges' son, Jordan Bridges."

On assuming he'd find work as a dramatic actor only: "For some reason I didn't think I would ever be able to make people laugh."

On his Broadway debut in "Three Days of Rain": "It was a do or die moment for me actually... I remember thinking 'if this doesn't work, maybe I'm not right for this business.'"

On working with "Silver Linings Playbook" co-star Jennifer Lawrence: "She's incredible. I did two movies already with her because I'm not stupid."

Expect big things for Bradley Cooper as awards season gets underway. He's already been nominated for a Golden Globe, two Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, an Independent Spirit Award, a People's Choice Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Watch a video of the interview below.

'Promised Land': The Reviews Are In!

Matt Damon and John Krasinski's collaboration doesn't really have critics universally impressed.
By Kara Warner

Matt Damon in "Promised Land"
Photo: Scott Green

The combined likability of actors Matt Damon and John Krasinski should be enough to have audiences interested in seeing their new movie "Promised Land." Adding to its appeal is the fact that the two stars also co-wrote the screenplay and Damon's "Good Will Hunting" director Gus Van Sant is at the helm. "Promised Land" revolves around a rural American town's struggle to recover from the economic downturn and whether they should sell drilling rights on their land to a large corporation in order to do so.

Despite the appeal of the film's packaging, the critical masses were not universally impressed with the whole of the finished product, which resulted in a "rotten" rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. Without further ado, join us for a trek through the mineral rich soil of the "Promised Land" reviews!

The Story
"Thirty-eight-year-old Steve Butler (Damon) is a top salesman for Global, a $9 billion fracking company that sends him to small towns nationwide to buy land from locals for the purposes of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking — a drilling process in which the soil is blasted with pressurized chemicals to release natural gas. As he and his associate Sue (Frances McDormand, dependably snappy) go door-to-door, obtaining signatures in exchange for assurances of economic salvation, Steve harbors conflicted feelings about a job he's clearly good at. Himself a farm boy turned big-city professional, he retains an honest affection for the blue-collar work ethic and humble, salt-of-the-earth spirit he encounters, and he's painfully aware that he's effectively gutting entire communities under the pretext of revitalizing them. Steve's moral reservations catch up with him on a job in Pennsylvania farm country, where a whip-smart high-school science teacher (a fine Hal Holbrook) successfully challenges Global's agenda and calls for the town to vote on the company's proposition rather than blithely accept it. An even peskier obstacle arrives in the form of Dustin Noble (Krasinski), a dogged activist who launches an anti-Global campaign, teaching locals that fracking is not only laying waste to a proud agricultural tradition, but also contributing to air/water pollution and killing livestock (problems examined at length in Josh Fox's 2010 docu 'GasLand')." — Justin Chang, Variety

The Environmental Message
" 'Promised Land' itself, however, has a point to make, and it does so in a way that is both honorable and disappointing. It admirably tries to represent both sides of the fracking debate, even though its allegiance is clearly to the antifracking position. There is nothing wrong with such advocacy, except that in this case it means that the movie veers away from its strengths, ending in a welter of convenient (and dubious) plot twists and puffed-up speeches. Viewers who are already skeptical of fracking are likely to find gratification in the film's sentimental, studiously ambiguous conclusion. Those seeking scientific information will need to look elsewhere — not that rigorous science is what anyone expects from a movie. But 'Promised Land' feels divided against itself, not quite sure how to reconcile its polemical intentions with its storytelling impulses, and thus finally unable to fulfill its own promise." — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

The Performances
"What's more, despite their Everyman appeal, Damon and Krasinski don't create much by way of emotional investment, instead becoming mirror images of their most mild-mannered, white-bread selves. 'Promised Land' is helped mightily by McDormand, who, as always, injects a jolt of welcome dry humor into every scene she's in, and Rosemarie DeWitt, as a local girl both men try to date. When these formidable actresses are on screen, "Promised Land" fizzes and pops; otherwise it's an attractive, well-intentioned dry well." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Small Town Setting and Sensibility
"Gliding on Danny Elfman's ethereal score and cinematographer Linus Sandgren's bucolic vistas, Promised Land (unlike Josh Fox's searing 2010 documentary 'Gasland') isn't a howl of anger against corporate callousness. Channeling its environmental concerns through the character of a quietly eloquent retired scientist (Hal Holbrook), the film maintains a homey, humorous tone that only occasionally crackles with anger or disappointment. Most of the pleasure derives from Damon and McDormand's prickly but pragmatic partnership and, later, Krasinski's breezy cockiness as Dustin Noble, an environmental activist who woos the locals with sob stories and karaoke. Watching Dustin murder Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" in front of a bar full of applauding farmers, Steve visibly deflates." — Jeannette Catsoulis, NPR

The Final Word
"But the script is unconvincing; two key narrative twists, one related to the other, are deeply hokey. Van Sant, a smooth craftsman, never gives us a town on the ropes. You keep hearing how tough things are — and in towns like this one, they are — yet ]'Promised Land,' from a story idea by Dave Eggers, is too concerned with shimmering rural vistas as photographed by cinematographer Linus Sandgren to give us much grit. A movie on this subject needs more than postcards from well-meaning writers and filmmakers just traveling through." — Michael Phillips, The Chicago Tribune

Six Tips for Returning/Exchanging Those Holiday Gifts

Christmas present.

Perhaps that snazzy electric blue sweater your favorite aunt got you isn't quite your type, or maybe that awesome Forever Lazy loungewear you won in the White Elephant gift exchange is a little snug. Don't worry—you're one of the millions who are expected to hit the stores this week to return or exchange holiday gifts.

According to the National Retail Federation, shoppers returned a record-high $46.28 billion in holiday merchandise in 2011. It remains to be seen if recipients were happier with their gifts this year.

Here's a short checklist to help your trip back to the busy stores, malls and shopping centers a little smoother:

Refunds and Exchanges Checklist

  • Know the seller’s return policy and timeline. Retailers often provide extended return/exchange holiday timeframes. Circle those dates on your calendar to avoid missing the date(s).
  • Be aware that return policies vary, so confirm before purchasing. Common return policies include cash-back, a credit card refund, a corporate refund check, or store credit.
  • Check if there are restocking fees for returned items.
  • Save your receipt along with any other documentation regarding the purchase. Your receipt serves as proof of purchase.
  • Do not open the box. Some businesses will only provide you with a full refund if the merchandise remains in an unopened box. Do note that some retailers will only provide exchanges for open box items.
  • Wait a few days to return your item(s) to avoid the "return rush." Shops on Dec. 26 will likely be swarming with return-to-sender shoppers, so if you want to avoid the crowds, give it a few days before you set out to make exchanges or returns.

UK trailer for Terrence Malick’s To The Wonder

To The Wonder, the next release by the uncharacteristically prolific Terrence Malick has released a UK trailer.

The trailer for the film is available to watch below, and while it’s unlikely to convert any Malick-sceptics, fans of the auteur’s style will lap it up.

Featuring a philosophical voiceover from Javier Bardem, the bulk of the trailer focuses on Olga Kurylenko, Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams as they generally skip, prance and brood their way through variously blustery fields.

Count us in.

Watch the trailer below:

To The Wonder hits UK cinemas on 22 February 2013.

Sheriff's Dept. to Conduct DUI Checkpoint in Nearby West Hollywood

Sheriff's deputies will conduct a DUI checkpoint Friday in West Hollywood.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department has announced it will, on Friday, conduct a checkpoint watching for those driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and/or without licenses in West Hollywood.

The locations of DUI/CDL checkpoints are based on DUI-related activity in the area. Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alchohol and/or drugs will be arrested, according to the sheriff's statement.

By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and others experts believe motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving.

Statewide, overall traffic deaths have declined 23 percent from 3,995 in 2007 to 3,081 in 2009 and total traffic fatalities are at their lowest level in six decades. DUI deaths have declined from 1,132 in 2007 to 950 in 2009, which is a decrease of over 16 percent, the sheriff's department said.

Funding for these operations is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/ through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.gov/.

The checkpoint, whose specific location was not disclosed, will take place from 7 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday.

Resolution Solution: 20 Ways to Go Green in 2013

If you want to be kinder to the planet and save some money at the same time, here are 20 ways to go green in 2013.

  1. Buy fresh, local food in season at your local farmers market.
  2. Have your kids make their friends birthday cards and bring gifts in decorated paper bags or a cool reusable bag. Kids love getting a handmade card—as do adults.
  3. Bring your own bags when you shop for groceries.
  4. Shop at consignment stores and thrift stores.
  5. Rip up some lawn and create new garden beds this spring, and then grow your own food this summer. Need help getting started?  Contact your local gardening supply store. Your kids will eat more veggies if they grow them themselves.
  6. Dispose of your hazardous waste properly.
  7. Buy a share in a community-supported agriculture (CSA) farm to support local, sustainable farming and enjoy fresh veggies weekly.
  8. Ditch those dreaded plastic sandwich bags and get some washable containers or bags. I like ReUsies, created by two Seattle moms.
  9. Cut down on car trips and run your errands on your bike or on foot.
  10. Pack cloth napkins instead of paper towels in school lunches.
  11. Look for an environmental service project you can do with your children, such as removing trash and non-native plants and planting trees in their place.
  12. Got an older house? Install double-pane windows and you’ll see immediate savings on your heating bill.
  13. Plant a tree. A certified arborist can help you select and plant trees that will provide privacy and shade and even years of fresh fruit. Find a certified arborist in your area.
  14. Dump your bottled water costs. You could save hundreds of dollars by buying snazzy metal water bottles for everyone in the family and a personal filter for your kitchen faucet.
  15. Organize a Halloween costume swap in September. This can be a great service project for a Girl Scout troop. Reserve a room at the library and publicize to local parenting groups and preschools.
  16. Replace your old light bulbs with LED bulbs. They last 15 times longer and use 75 percent less energy.
  17. Expand your hand-me-down circle. Organize a clothing swap for your kids’ preschool or a group of friends. Everyone brings gently used and clean kids’ clothes to your garage and parents can take as many items as they donated. The rest goes to charity. You can also swap toys and books.
  18. Replace your showerheads with low-flow models. Low-flow showerheads can save you up to 15 percent on water heating costs and reduce your water usage by as much as 20,000 gallons a year.
  19. Save up to 30 percent on your monthly heating bills by having a home energy audit done by a professional. Check with your local utility to see if they offer this service.
  20. Give service and experience gifts this year instead of stuff. Make homemade gift certificates for services and experiences that could include tech support, dinner and a movie, yard work, pet walking or babysitting, or a day of organizing support for the clutter challenged.

Do you think you could stick to a green New Year's resolution? Share your thoughts and suggestions in the comments sections below.

Two to five vehicles collided Friday night on the northbound Hollywood Freeway in North Hollywood, prompting closure of lanes and an on-ramp and backing up traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The multiple vehicle crash was reported at 9:21 p.m. near Victory Boulevard, said CHP Officer Tatiana Sauquillo.

"There were multiple vehicles involved," Sauquillo said. "The extent of injury and number of victims is unknown. Patients are being evaluated now."

Sauquillo said two right lanes were closed to traffic in the area, and the Victory Boulevard on-ramp was also closed.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

VIDEO: Rose Parade Float Volunteers Work at a Furious Paste

Time lapse video of Rose Parade floats being decorated

Everyone has different reasons for wanting to help decorate a Rose Parade float.

Slackers certainly need not apply. Most of the work is tedious, requiring volunteers to carefully glue lima beans, flower buds and crushed and sifted flower crumbs onto designated areas in a paint-by-numbers sort of way.

You've got to know how to color inside the lines for this kind of work.

The scheduling is air-tight and float foremen—also volunteers—ensure that their crew is hard at work during the two, eight-hour shifts on the weekends leading up to the Rose Parade on Jan. 1.

Starting on Friday, the public can watch the floats being decorated.

Related Posts:

Phoenix Decorating Company is building almost half of the 42 Rose Parade floats you'll see in the parade.

One of those floats belongs to the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee, which has participated in the parade for 34 years. This year's theme is "Oh the Places You'll Go!" borrowed from children's book author Dr. Seuss.

"So we took that, turned it around and said, All the places we go, because Rotarians travel the world and conduct humanitarian service," said Kate Rosloff, public relations chair for the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee and a Culver City resident.

The float features a big world globe to symbolize Rotarians' world-travel and turning gears that, like its members, work together to accomplish good, said Rosloff.

The floats can cost $80,000-$120,000 and are typically funded by the Rotary clubs.

Rotary Rose Parade float volunteers come from around the world, some as far away as Japan and Africa. Local volunteers include Libby Huff from Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, Marc Hyatt from Long Beach, Marti Rosenberg of Encinitas, Richard Hill Adam from San Juan Capistrano, Ian Miessen from Redondo Beach, Kmud Flygenring from Northridge and Greg Hargrove of Santa Monica.

This is the first year that Long Beach resident Wendy Jacobs got involved in decorating for the Rose Parade. She volunteered to help decorate for Donate Life, an organ donation organization that's had a float in the Rose Parade for 10 years.

Jacobs recently discovered that she has kidney disease and heard about Donate Life through the transplant clinic she visited in Loma Linda.

She went online and found out that "Oh, they do the Rose Parade," Jacobs said. "It's something that I've always wanted to do."

"It's part of the process of me going from a lifestyle of travel and work and things like that, which have now pretty much been put on hold," she said.

Mike Thompson has been participating in Rose Parade float decorating for 25 years. He's a retired real estate developer in Newport Beach and loves to work with volunteers. Thompson and his wife are crew chiefs for the Donate Life Float.

"I tell people this is really my Christmas," Thompson said. "The joy I bring to people, and that people get by working on this float, is really wonderful."

Donate Life makes the parade work for them, Thompson said. Many of the floats are being used as advertising.

"Donate Life has found a way to basically make this parade raise up volunteers, raise up donors in order to help people live a lot longer," Thompson said.

Larry Madick remembers a time when there were no corporate sponsors in the Rose Parade. The Culver City resident is president of the Pasadena Rose Float Club Kiwanis and started participating in the Rose Parade in high school some 54 years ago, he said.

"Back in the old days, in the 50's, it was all nothing but city floats and all the cities were doing it," said Madick. "Now it's nothing but corporate sponsors."

Madick wore a green windbreaker covered in Rose Parade pins.

"I've got seven more of these jackets with pins on them at home," he said. "It's about working with the volunteers, seeing the same ones come back year after year doing the decorations. You get hooked."

Kerri Mellor of Redondo Beach, a program manager in the Air Force, decided she'd give decorating a shot. This is her first year and she was assigned to the Trader Joe's float.

"I just found out that you could volunteer and thought it would always be cool to decorate on a float," she said.

Tom Prober of Altadena, also assigned to the Trader Joe's float, has been decorating floats since he was in high school. Prober is a retired Los Angeles Unified School District teacher.

"I have fun doing it," Prober said. "It's only a couple of weeks and you're a part of something really fun and good."

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly named Rotary International as having a float in the Rose Parade when it was the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee that was responsible for decorating the float mentioned.

Quentin Tarantino To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award From Rome Film Fest

Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained had been rumored as a surprise addition to November’s Rome Film Festival, but it never materialized on the roster. In October, fest director Marco Mueller told Reuters, “You will see Tarantino soon, here. You will see him here soon for a big surprise… You will see that Django will be stepping on the stage of the auditorium.” Fast-forward a couple of months and the fest now plans to honor Tarantino with a Lifetime Achievement Award on January 4 at a gala Django screening. (Although the 7th Rome Film Festival concluded on November 17, the honor will evidently act as an extension of that edition). Composer Ennio Morricone will present the award to Tarantino. A press release follows:
The 7th Rome Film Festival (Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma) will confer its Lifetime Achievement Award to Quentin Tarantino. The American director, screenwriter, actor, and producer, winner of an Oscar® for Pulp Fiction, the author of extraordinary works such as Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill:Vol.1, Kill Bill:Vol.2 and Inglourious Basterds, will receive the award on January 4th on the occasion of the gala screening of the new film he has written and directed, Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx, Leonardo Di Caprio, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kerry Washington. The celebrated film-composer Ennio Morricone will be presenting the award to the director. “Quentin Tarantino’s vision ... Read More »
