End of the World Street Party Tonight in Weho

Weho's 2012 End of the World party starts at 8 p.m. on Larabee Street and Santa Monica Boulevard.

The end of the world as we know it? Maybe, maybe not. But what better excuse for some West Hollywood revelry is there than marking the Mayan apocalypse with eclectic festivities on Santa Monica Boulevard?

On Friday night the city, West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Visit West Hollywood present the 2012 End of the World street celebration for those who want to go down partying. Here are the details:

WHEN: Friday, Dec. 21, 2012

8 p.m. - End of the World celebration begins. Momma, ANT, DJ Keith Jacobsen and gogo dancers take the stage.

8:30 p.m. - City Council remarks.

9:09 p.m. - DJ Keith Jacobsen to play "It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" by REM leading up to the "End of the World" countdown.

9:12 p.m. – End of the World countdown takes place.

9:13 p.m. - Derrick Knight performs "Mayan Rain Dance" with dancers.

WHERE: Larrabee Street at Santa Monica Boulevard between Revolver and Eleven nightclubs, and local businesses including bars and restaurants along Santa Monica Boulevard.

The city's website provides the following description:

The street celebration will feature DJ Keith Jacobsen playing music; a performance of Derrick Knight’s song, “Mayan Rain Dance”; and giveaways for “End of the World” revelers. Hosts for the evening include Worthie Meacham, known as “Momma” and the comedian ANT. A group toast will take place at 9:12 p.m. to celebrate the “End of the World” or (at least) the End of the Mayan Calendar.

"This falls in the category of 'only in West Hollywood,'" said Councilmember John Duran. "Whether December 21st marks the end of the world, the beginning of new human consciousness or just another Friday night—West Hollywood is always there for a cheeky moment and a reason to celebrate."

The Mayan Long Count calendar is made up of 394-year periods called baktuns. Experts estimate the system starts counting at 3114 B.C., and will have run through 13 baktuns, or 5,125 years, around Friday, December 21, 2012. Thirteen was a significant number for the Maya, and the end of that cycle would be a milestone. Some say the ancient Mayan Long Count calendar predicts Friday, December 21, 2012 as an event of spiritual and transformational change, and the kick-off of a new era on Earth. Others interpret the date to be the end of the world.

Participating businesses include the Abbey Food & Bar, Block Party WeHo, Eleven Nightclub, Fiesta Cantina, Mickey’s West Hollywood, Revolver Video Bar and Yogurt Stop.
