“Catching Fire” will miss director Gary Ross

Director Gary Ross addressed recent reports speculating about whether he would return at the helm for the second movie in the Hunger Games franchise. Gary Ross will not be directing the sequel “Catching Fire”. The post-production schedule became too arduous for Ross to carry through with a plan to write the sequel outline and then pen the script with Collins.

He issued the following statement:

“Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct Catching Fire. As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule.
I loved making The Hunger Games – it was the happiest experience of my professional life. Lionsgate was supportive of me in a manner that few directors ever experience in a franchise: they empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results. And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of me through this difficult decision.
I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the gifted and remarkable Jennifer Lawrence whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends.
To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

According to the cast, they are sad to see Gary Ross go and he will be missed.

Jay Sean's Pitbull Collabo The 'Epitome' Of Feel-Good Summer Tracks

'I think sometimes certain voices and certain vibes and certain styles just work together,' Sean says of 'I'm All Yours' collabo.
By Jocelyn Vena

Jay Sean

For Jay Sean's lead single, "I'm All Yours," off his forthcoming album Worth It All, there was only one guy who could capture the track's bounce and party vibe. That guy is Miami-bred rhymer Pitbull, who brings his signature sense of gruffy swagger to the song.

"Well, you know, people who know my music, especially when I first came over to America, one of the first things that people noticed with my songs is I like to do feel-good songs. And when it comes to the singles, that's what I like to give them. And 'I'm All Yours' is really the epitome of all that," Sean explained to MTV News about the dance track.

Full of pounding beats and bleeps, the song is about falling for a girl who makes all the partying and fun even better.

"It's taking the modern movement of dance, which has obviously taken over the whole world, but I'm not putting it in the nightclub environment," he continued. "So it's still got that element of romance, which is what I like to bring to music. So it's high-energy and romantic. And the Pitbull collaboration actually happened in Australia, where we were on tour together, and you know, we're all fans of each other. We got talking, like, 'Man, we should do something.' So we laid it out right there and then."

What emerged from their friendship is a song tailor-made for both Sean and Pit. The track is fun, summery and a definite dance-floor anthem, three qualities these two guys know a lot about given their individual music histories.

"I think the thing is, you got someone like Pit and myself, we share similar fanbases, but also, as I said, it's that high-energy music that really blends well together," he said. "And I think sometimes certain voices and certain vibes and certain styles just work together on a record, so it was just nice the way it came out."

Paddington Bear Movie: Book To Be Developed Into Feature Film

Coming off the paws that Clifford the Big Red Dog is getting the big-screen treatment, across the pond, another beloved children's character is being adapted into a feature film.

According to Variety, Studiocanal is partnering with "Harry Potter" bigwig David Heyman to adapt Michael Bond's Paddington Bear. Paul King ("The Mighty Boosh") will direct the movie, which will be half-CGI, half-live-action.

Paddington has enjoyed great success in the children's literature world, having sold over 35 million copies worldwide, and being published in 40 different languages. The movie is said to be a "modern take" on the story, which follows a polite, talking bear who was found in Paddington station and adopted by a British family.

"Paddington Bear is a universally loved character, treasured for his optimism, his sense of fair play, and his perfect manners -- and of course for his unintentional talent for comic chaos," said Heyman.

Britain's Got Talent final: Simon Cowell shows off his hairy chest

By Emily Sheridan

|

It's normally the fashion of Britain's Got Talent's female judges Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon that gets people talking.

But on last night's final of the ITV show, viewers couldn't help noticing Simon Cowell's unbuttoned shirt and hairy chest.

In contrast to David Walliams' smart suit, the music mogul was going for a more casual look in his jeans, white shirt and blazer.

And as the camera cut to Simon after the eventual winners Ashleigh Butler and her dog Pudsey finished performing, he gave viewers a good look at his hairy chest as he adjusted his shirt.

Both viewers and fellow celebrities took to Twitter to mock Cowell's 'Medallion man' style... a departure from his normal grey and white T-shirts.

Phillip Schofield and his Twitter followers shared plenty of playful banter about Cowell's chest flashing.

He wrote: 'Was Simon opening his shirt FOR THE DOG?!!!!!! Good Lord :)

'Mind you Pudsey was astonishing.'

He then retweeted a follower's comment that: 'I think he was trying to assert his alpha-male dominance and show Pudsey he is also a hairy beast.'

A second retweeted compared Cowell with Schofield's This Morning co-host Holly Willoughby's famous cleavage: 'He was competing with @hollywills on the cleavage front :0.'

And Schofield's Dancing On Ice co-host Christine Bleakley was also entertained by Cowell's body hair.

She wrote on her Twitter page: 'Oh wow, Simon Cowell actually opened an extra bottom on his shirt after Pudsey and Ashley performance. I LOVE that dog! #BGT.'

Also on the show, David Walliams played up to the pair's 'bromance' by swapping seats with Amanda so they could sit together at the end of the show.

The comedian stared into Simon's face as the music mogul talked to hosts Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly and then massaged his shoulders.#

Simon complained: 'I can't do this with that thing there. Its got to look away.'

Critic’s Notebook: From After Dark Films, a Spate of Genre Movies

After Dark Films

Cung Le, right, battles Scott Sheeley in “Dragon Eyes,” directed by John Hyams, one of a new series of action-genre films.

Ahhhh, the music of action movies: the squeal of car brakes, the staccato report of an assault rifle, the meaty crunch of a roundhouse right. Not everyone’s idea of ear candy, certainly, but for discerning mavens of mayhem, these auditory delights, and their visual accompaniment, are delectable.

After Dark Films

In “El Gringo,” Scott Adkins has his travel plans disrupted.

After Dark Action, a series of B pictures, is aimed at this slam-bang posse and arrives with barrels blazing. (Its initial offerings began weeklong theatrical runs on Friday, with concurrent video-on-demand debuts.) Its potent testosterone cocktails come partly courtesy of the producer Joel Silver (“Commando,” “Die Hard,” the “Lethal Weapon” series), whose company, Dark Castle Home Entertainment, has allied with the independent studio After Dark Films (“An American Haunting”) to bring fresh visions of carnage to the screen.

And a budding generation of brawlers. After Dark’s first crop of films in this series — there are five; I’ve seen three — often pairs comparative newcomers with aging action mainstays. Take the weathered Jean-Claude Van Damme in John Hyams’s chop-and-kick fest “Dragon Eyes.” He plays Tiano, a convict who befriends Hong (the mixed-martial-arts champion Cung Le), a quiet fellow pummeled in the penitentiary yard, and imparts all the wisdom (and savate moves) he knows. Yes, the Muscles From Brussels now portrays a kind of shifu, the wizened teacher from a thousand kung fu movies.

Mr. Van Damme’s moves show rust. Mr. Le, on the other hand, does not disappoint in the flying-feet department. He may not have Jackie Chan’s humor or Bruce Lee’s taut gravity, but his humility and physical grace pack a considerable punch. (For my money, hand-to-hand combat always trumps gunplay aesthetically.)

When Hong is released, he hits the town of St. Jude (the reference to lost causes is not coincidental) to finish a job Tiano started: crushing its drug lords. (As a dapper don, Peter Weller, of “Robocop,” is deliciously, sadistically outsize.)

Hong’s strategy comes straight from Sergio Leone’s “Fistful of Dollars” playbook, itself stolen from Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo”: Pit rival gangs against one another. The Leone touches don’t end there. Characters are introduced with their names rolling across the screen, Ă  la “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” Hong, recovering from a brutal beating, wears a Mexican poncho practically emblazoned with a Man With No Name designer label.

But this is an urban actioner, with the usual dank industrial interiors and hip-hop soundtrack. Mr. Hyams is nimble with his camera angles, breakneck editing and desaturated hues. If only he had sidestepped the John Woo-style “Mexican standoff” climax, now hoary: the antagonists in a circle, pistols drawn.

Leone also hovers over “El Gringo,” Eduardo Rodriguez’s south-of-the-border blood bath, which blatantly samples Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western scores. The actor-kickboxer Scott Adkins plays a disillusioned cop betrayed by a corrupt superior (Christian Slater, showing wear and tear), who stumbles into a sun-baked Mexican village toting about $2 million in stolen drug money on his back.

All he wants to do is to reach Acapulco. But passing through is tough in a town dominated by a cartel given to black dusters, white greasepaint and skull-like eye shadow. He’ll have to mow down this army first, which he accomplishes in narrow streets to the eruption of countless blood squibs.

It could all grow tedious were it not for a bartender played with verve by Yvette Yates. Her appealing insolence and tasteful love scene provide relief from the sanguinary assaults and Mr. Adkins’s often opaque line readings. (See Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in Robert Rodriguez’s “Desperado” for the definitive Tex-Mex shoot ’n’ smooch.)

Good action films, like good horror movies, often suggest a political subtext (Paul Verhoeven’s “Robocop” being the ne plus ultra). “El Gringo” limply tries. Tossing money to law-abiding citizens appears to be its solution to the current cartel wars in Mexico. Nice thought — but real life is more complicated.

“Transit,” Antonio Negret’s thriller about a family tormented by contentious robbers, flirts with psychological complexity. Jim Caviezel, who can be seen weekly in the CBS drama “Person of Interest,” is an ex-con vacationing in Louisiana with his wife (Elisabeth Rohm of “Law & Order”) and sons in an effort to reunite them. When the crooks plant their loot in his S.U.V. and try to reclaim it, he must protect his loved ones and regain their respect.

“Transit” grazes the theme of violence as a rite of passage from Sam Peckinpah’s “Straw Dogs,” adding the automotive fireworks of Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof” and the bayou claustrophobia of Walter Hill’s “Southern Comfort.” As with other After Dark Action offerings, it’s well-trod ground, if rendered with polish. It connects, but unlike the movies that influenced it, it doesn’t blow you away.

Scarface's Rooted To Feature Akon, Jadakiss

'It's just a structure that can't be moved and that would be me,' Face tells 'RapFix Live' about meaning behind album title.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Four years ago, when Scarface dropped Emeritus, he said it would be the last album in a long, illustrious career that included well-regarded works like 1994's The Diary, 1997's The Untouchable and 2002's The Fix. But just like Jay-Z, Too $hort and other MCs who have pledged to walk away from rap, the Houston lyricist just couldn't stay away.

Face's follow-up Rooted is on the way, and when the former Geto Boy moseyed up to on Wednesday, he firmly replanted his hip-hop flag. Rap retirement is clearly a foregone feeling, as the man born Brad Jordan breaks down the significance of his new album title. "It's just a structure that's gonna be there. It's like a concrete pillar, you can't get it out the way, it's there, it's grounded," he says of Rooted. "It's just a structure that can't be moved and that would be me."

The veteran MC estimates that the LP is about 98 percent done, but Face is also a well-documented perfectionist; if he could, he'd tinker with an album for years before releasing it. "You're gonna see an album this summer," Scarface promised, before humorously backtracking, "or this fall, winter."

When Rooted does arrive, it'll feature vocal contributions from Akon, Cee Lo, John Legend and Jadakiss and production from Virginia beatsmith Nottz and underground favorite Jake One. Ultimately Scarface credits California producer Ervin "EP" Pope with helping to refine Rooted. "I got some good stuff. EP saved the project," he said of the producer who has crafted beats for Ne-Yo and Game. "I just sent him my whole album, that's how much I cared if he leaked it or not, but instead he finished the tracks, he put the hooks on, he put some instruments in and he made the album. I appreciate EP for what he did."

iCarly 'Crushing On A Geeky Guy' On Next Episode

'There's a twist at the end,' Miranda Cosgrove teases MTV News of new show, airing Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on Nickelodeon.

This week's episode of "iCarly" is taking a stab at the world of computer sales at an Apple-esque store. If that doesn't sound like a fascinating plotline, the cast assures fans that there will be zany antics, some friendly rivalry and even some romance. We bet you never thought all that intrigue could squeeze its way in there!

"Today, we are on the set of 'iCarly' and we are shooting some scenes for an episode called 'I Work for Pear,' " Jennette McCurdy, who plays Sam, told MTV News about the episode. "[My character] Sam ends up getting hired for the job, because she's so good with the customers and at selling things. Mad trouble ensues because Freddie's mad at Sam. Sam's not meant to work.

"The Sam and Freddie relationship has been explored on many fronts," McCurdy continued about her link to Nathan Kress' character. "There was the first few seasons where they were bickering constantly, and then there was some touching on a relationship, which, let me tell you, was a real treat for us ... it wasn't awkward at all," she joked about their brother/sister relationship.

It seems that Kress was hoping to escape to the Pear store to indulge in his love for computers. "I can't really think of any better place for Freddie to go since he's such a computer nerd than to be at the mecca of computer-nerd salesmen," he said. "There's some really big complicated scenes, because all of us are there, but we each have our own story lines."

For the show's leading lady, Miranda Cosgrove, she notes that Carly Shaw found something other than computers to keep her intrigued at Pear. "In this episode of 'iCarly,' Freddie gets a job at the Pear store, and shortly after, he's absolutely in shock, because he finds out that Sam gets a job at the Pear store as well," she said. "My part on the episode is, I'm crushing on a geeky guy who's really sweet, and then there's a twist at the end."

While she couldn't say what the twist is, Noah Munck, who plays Gibby, had this guarantee: "It is definitely a hilarious episode." The show airs Saturday night at 8 p.m.

Are you looking forward to a trip to the "iCarly" Pear store? Let us know in the comments!

Dennis Quaid's Marriage to Wife Kim: Back On!

Posted Friday May 4, 2012 3:12 PM GMT

Looking to have a sudden sway in her marital thoughts, Dennis Quaid's wife Kimberly Buffington has pulled the plug on the pair's divorce proceedings.

Kim filed papers for a split back in March, but in a new set of documents the blonde asked for her decision to be reversed, after which a judge granted a dismissal of the court case, according to TMZ.

As GossipCenter previously reported, Buffington had claimed "The marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities ... that destroys the legitimate ends of the marriage relationship and prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation."

During that time Kim was asking for spousal support from Quaid, in addition to all attorney fees, a Range Rover and the couple's main house.

Diddy Says G. Dep's Murder Conviction Is 'A Shame'

'It all stemmed from substance abuse,' Combs says in response to G. Dep's second-degree murder charge.
By Carter Maness

Not long after Diddy turned heads at Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group press conference on Wednesday, he appeared on Funkmaster Flex's Hot 97 radio show and addressed the recent tribulations of two of his former Bad Boy artists: G. Dep and Mase.

According to Diddy, G. Dep, who was recently convicted of second-degree murder on a 1993 shooting charge stemming from a botched robbery in Harlem, became a different person when severe substance-abuse issues took hold of his life.

"None of that was in G. Dep's nature. When there were certain things that he was going through with the substance-abuse situation, he would be a different person. But on an everyday [basis], he was probably one of the nicest, most quiet, shyest, most humble cats that was out there," he told Flex. "I was like, OK, maybe he was under the influence when he confessed. And then out of nowhere, they said he was convicted, which was such a shame, because he's such a great talent. And it all stemmed from substance abuse."

Diddy also recently got a surprise when recording for the remix to Wale's "Slight Work." He was paired with his former right-hand man Mase, a platinum-selling rapper who was rumored to be a new signee of Ross' Maybach Music Group earlier this week.

"Me and Mase are cool. We've kept in touch over the years. I love Mase," he told Flex of the MC who once retired to become a preacher. "If it wasn't for Mase, I wouldn't be where I was at today. Me and him were like Batman and Robin. So it felt good to get back on a record with him, and it's one of the hottest, most intense records in the club. That's what I specialize in. And then talking that talk."

Last week Mase addressed a rumor that he might be signing with Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group. "[Rico Love] just called and asked me to take a ride with him — I didn't know who was gonna be in the studio," Mase explained. "I got there and everybody was there, and they just said, 'Take a flick.' The next thing I know I got a Maybach chain, I got 20 beats from Kanye. The stories just keep getting crazier."

'American Idol' Report Card: Joshua Ledet Scores, Hollie Cavanagh Moves On Up

Top 5 took on British tunes and songs of the '60s on Wednesday night's 'Idol.'
By James Montgomery

Another night, another double-dip on "American Idol," as the top five tackled both British tunes and songs from the 1960s. (Does Nigel Lythgoe just randomly pick theme weeks out of a top hat or something?) And while the headline remained the same — shockingly, Joshua Ledet killed it — the subtext of Wednesday night's show was where things really started to get interesting.

Hollie Cavanagh showed she's still got plenty of fight left. Jessica Sanchez continued her transformation from a genuine singing machine into an actual machine. Skylar Laine remained a dark-horse contender. And Phillip Phillips just did whatever the heck he wanted to. Yes, with just a few weeks left in the competition, the race for the season 11 crown is officially on.

And as always, we were watching, notepads in hand, ready to dole out some grades for the remaining "Idol" hopefuls. You can probably guess who's at the top of the class ... but who might be packing their bags and headed for boarding school? Read on to find out!

Joshua Ledet: When the judges are saying you're one of the best "Idol" contestants of all time (not to mention one of the best singers "of the past 50 years"), you must be doing something right. Once again, Ledet lapped the competition, getting big and brassy with the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and then completely, totally, absolutely slaying the Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody" ... in the night-closing slot, nonetheless. That performance touched off a wave of complimentary one-upsmanship from the judges, culminating in J.Lo dropping that "past 50 years" line (for the record, she's 42). And you know what? That praise is deserved: Ledet's the best singer on the show — by a mile — and unlike some of his fellow hopefuls, he brings genuine emotion to each and every song. I can't wait until he's voted off in, like, two weeks, so America can get the Skylar/Phil Phillips matchup they so desperately desire. Grade: A

Hollie Cavanagh: Yesterday, I joked (for not so nice reasons) that "Idol" producers stacked the deck in her favor by choosing British/'60s songs ... unaware, of course, that HCav would actually deliver the goods. Sure, her version of Ike & Tina's "River Deep, Mountain High" was heavy on awards-show histrionics, but she did the song justice — or "wore it out," according to Randy — and while she may have lacked some fire, you cannot deny she sang it perfectly. Then she knocked it out of the park with Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love," coming through in the clutch with a performance that was restrained and refined on one verse, big and brave the next. It was probably her best moment on the show ... good enough to make Randy invoke he-who-shall-not-be-named (Simon Cowell) live on the air! Is it possible Hollie's staging a comeback? B+

Skylar Laine: I was fired up when Little Steven talked her into doing CCR's "Fortunate Son," which shows you how much I know: Skylar never really seemed to be comfortable with the song, starting rough and barely improving from there (though the ending was nice, I suppose). She rebounded slightly with Dusty Springfield's "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," which showed that she doesn't have to be in attack mode all the time. I still think she's a dark horse to win this whole thing, but middling performances like these aren't doing her any favors. Then again, neither is Steven Tyler complimenting her "boot scoot." C+

Jessica Sanchez: Clearly rattled since her near-elimination a few weeks back, J.Sanch continued her slide on Wednesday night with a pair of performances that were big on notes but largely bereft of actual emotion (did she and Hollie switch bodies or something?!?). Her take on Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" was appropriately over-the-top but lacked real passion, which Randy actually picked up on — way to be awake, dawg! — while J.Lo chose to ignore it. Steven's take? "The only thing that gives experience a run for its money is a 16-year-old." Gross, dude. Her version of Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful" was most notable for its goofy stage design — is she starting a coven or something? — and the one big note she hit. And that's why I think Sanchez is living on borrowed time: She can outsing pretty much anybody, but the connection just isn't there. Then again, that's usually what happens when you're 16 and your biggest concern is, like, the prom. C–

Phillip Phillips: Not the best of nights for Phil-Squared, who laid it up with the Box Tops' "The Letter," and then bricked it big-time on the Zombies' "Time of the Season." The former was notable mostly for being exactly the same thing he's been doing for, like, 13 weeks now (the judges, of course, praised him for his "uniqueness"), only with more horn players added for no good reason. The latter, which saw him attempt to explore "melody," was pitchy and pinched and really pretty pained ... then again, he totally got to work a sweet jam sesh in there for a second, bro. At this point, it's pretty clear PP only does what PP wants, so how far can sheer handsomeness carry him? Oh, probably all the way to the title. C–

Beyonce's 'Run The World' Started Off As 'A Joke'?

'It was a song we did, kind of like a funny, kind-of-a-joke song,' Diplo tells BBC Radio of B's 2011 single, which sampled his Major Lazer song.

This may come as a surprise to devoted disciples of the Queen B, but according to producer Diplo, Beyoncé's 2011 single "Run the World (Girls)" actually started as "a joke."

"I think a lot of people don't even realize where that song came from," Diplo told BBC Radio's Newsbeat. "That song never really had a push. It was a song we did, kind of like a funny, kind-of-a-joke song."

"Run the World" was released as the first single from Bey's much-anticipated 4 album, though it was met with a slightly puzzled reaction from some of her die-hard fans and failed to generate much heat on the charts, reaching only #29 on the Billboard Hot 100. Subsequent singles "Best Thing I Never Had" and "Love on Top" fared slightly better, going as high as #16.

Of course, Diplo isn't actually credited as a producer on "Run the World" (that honor would go to The-Dream, Switch, Beyoncé herself and Shea Taylor), but he did snag a writing credit, thanks to the song's hefty sample of his Major Lazer track "Pon de Floor." But he did produce the 4 track "End of Time" and remembered the experience as a surreal one.

"We had to finish up a few records we were working with her on," Dip said. "That was super-weird, man. Like, I remember we were in the studio working with her and I still couldn't believe it."

Documentarians Work in Pairs, and Fight About It

WHEN David Redmon and Ashley Sabin were first falling in love, they took a trip to Mexico. Not that kind of trip. They went to shoot a documentary about the squalid conditions of the workers who make Victoria’s Secret bags. The film never took shape, but the relationship flourished.

“It was pretty romantic,” said Ms. Sabin, who recalled being chased by a security detail to the American border. “It was also pretty rugged. It was an interesting way to get to know each other.”

Eight years and five completed films later Mr. Redmon and Ms. Sabin, who plan to marry in June, are a documentary directing team that has navigated the tricky terrain of balancing their personal life with making nonfiction films together. Their latest, “Downeast,” about the reopening of a seafood plant in Maine, is screening at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend.

“The work carries over to the apartment, and into bed, and over to the next morning at breakfast,” Mr. Redmon said. “It’s a triangular relationship.”

Documentary directing teams — whether fiancĂ©es, best friends, siblings, spouses, or even exes — are standard in an industry not known for its remunerative prospects. On a tight budget two people can do most of the labor on a film, which can take many years to complete. It’s a formula that has proven successful.

“We are greater than the sum of our parts,” said Dan Lindsay about working with his friend T. J. Martin, with whom he won this year’s Academy Award for best documentary feature, for “Undefeated.” “I make better material with T. J. than I would on my own.”

Before the advent of digital cameras, making a documentary required a two-member crew “that could be synchronous,” said D. A. Pennebaker, who has directed more than a dozen films with his wife, Chris Hegedus, including “The War Room” (1993). With the mobile filmmaking equipment that Mr. Pennebaker helped develop in the 1960s one person held the camera, and the other handled the sound.

That division of labor — which resulted in each director having a different perspective on the action — was most effective in teams that had “an equality of opinion, where you couldn’t railroad the other person,” he said. “Plus, when you had to make sense of what you were filming, two heads were better than one.”

Even with digital equipment that now allows directors to work solo, partnerships still abound. “We are almost more intertwined than I am with my husband,” Heidi Ewing said of Rachel Grady, with whom she created the production company Loki Films. “With Rachel there’s creativity, finances and reputation at stake.”

Ms. Ewing and Ms. Grady prefer to divide their time in the field, so that one of them can look at the video in the editing room with fresh eyes. On their first feature together, “The Boys of Baraka,” about Baltimore students attending a boarding school in Kenya, Ms. Grady was on location when the subjects played a graphic game of cops and robbers. In the moment she felt that the material she was capturing was exploitative, she said.

When Ms. Ewing saw the sequence, she said it would be the perfect way to open the film. The two argued until they agreed. “It became the heart of the movie,” Ms. Grady said. “And I love it.”

Disagreements are an inherent, and productive, part of their working relationship, Ms. Grady added. “You’ve got creativity, money and ego involved,” she said. “These are the ingredients for explosions.”

For Bill and Turner Ross, brothers who have directed two films together, the tensions that arise can mean reverting to adolescent modes of engagement. During an all-night shoot in New Orleans for their second film, “Tchoupitoulas,” which has yet to be released, the two got into a fight in which Turner, now 29, slammed his brother’s face against a door. The older Mr. Ross, 32, attributed the episode to stress, alcohol and his brother’s “digging in too deep.”

The younger Mr. Ross agreed: “When you know someone that intimately, you can really hurt them.”

Ms. Hegedus said that she and Mr. Pennebaker “usually get divorced once or twice during the editing of a film,” and, in truth, many relationships have been sundered. Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski, who won an Oscar for the 2004 documentary “Born Into Brothels,” were involved romantically for the first two years of a film that took four years to complete.

“That was harder than anything I’ve been through, but we decided that our personal lives were less important than the film,” said Mr. Kauffman, who refers to the eight children in the documentary, as well as the film itself, as his and Ms. Briski’s “nine stepkids.”

Ms. Sabin and Mr. Redmon reached a very “volatile core” on their previous film, “Girl Model,” which will be released this summer. “In the beginning our voice was one voice, but by ‘Girl Model’ we had very strong, very different, opinions,” Ms. Sabin said. “I regret where it took us as a couple, but it was really important for our growth as filmmakers.”

To help mend the relationship Ms. Sabin took a lesser role in “Downeast” and will be stepping away from filmmaking and doing graduate work in film studies in the fall.

Mr. Redmon and Ms. Sabin might learn from the experience of Julia Reichert, who started directing films in the 1970s with Jim Klein, with whom she has a daughter.

After her personal relationship with Mr. Klein dissolved, Ms. Reichert became involved with another filmmaker, Steven Bognar. The two decided not to direct films together, a resolution that lasted 10 years, until they partnered on “A Lion in the House,” a 2006 film about children with cancer. And so, the couple developed two ground rules for co-directing: never talk about the film while drinking and never in the bedroom.

“We break those rules on occasion,” said Mr. Bognar, who added that those creative disagreements tend not to fester. “Sometimes we’ll have a stupid argument about who’s going to change the oil in the car, and it’s really to see who’s going to win the argument. But when we argue as directors, the conflict is more sincere. Because it’s about what makes the best film.”
