What Will Mark Millar Be Doing for Marvel?
Marvel Studios Countdown is a biweekly column focusing on all things related to Marvel Studios and their movies, past, present and future.
Last week, Twentieth Century Fox made the announcement that they’d extended an offer to comic creator Mark Millar (The Ultimates, Kick-Ass, Wanted) to come aboard as a creative consultant on its Marvel properties. Fox may have let Daredevil go, but they still have cinematic control of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. They’re putting together X-Men: Days of Future Past, a film that promises to unite the First Class world with that of the original trilogy (which is already, obviously sort of combined - you can read all about its broken timeline here), as well as a reboot of Fantastic Four from Chronicle director Josh Trank. It sounds like Marvel is in good hands at Fox, so what’s Mark Millar’s role?
Cheerleader?
Kevin Feige is president of production at Marvel Studios and has been a continual unifying face for the brand ever since the success of Iron Man in 2008. He seems to have a handle on the characters, certainly on their cinematic potential, and acts as Marvel’s best cheerleader when it comes time to make big announcements. Of course, his job is bigger than just being a human pep rally for Marvel’s films, but he provides a face for fans to associate with, and fits the role nicely.
Fox may be looking for their own frontman for the X-Men and Fantastic Four, someone Fox figures fans will see as one of their own. Millar fits that bill, having written both properties during his time at Marvel, and is notoriously gregarious with the press. In fact, that may be Millar’s undoing, as his willingness to tell the press anything, at any time, is not typically the way the studios like to do things.
If his role is as a cheerleader, Fox will need to tighten the leash on Millar, who dishes on rumors and possibilities as if they are hard news. Feige is wise to only make announcements as they are formalized and leave everything else up to teases and conjecture. Guardians of the Galaxy may have been the worst kept rumor from Marvel’s slate, but it wasn’t confirmed until it was confirmed. I half expect Millar to leave internal meetings and spill every detail of the discussions on his Millarworld forums. If Fox can live with that, then Millar is a personable choice.
Joss Whedon tweaked the Avengers script to his liking, and there are rumors that he’s done the same to Captain America: Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, despite not helming either film. Could Millar be the final word on Fox’s Marvel scripts as they enter production? He launched Ultimate X-Men and had stints on Fantastic Four and Ultimate Fantastic Four, so he knows these characters (despite no screenwriting background). Fox may be looking for someone to create a consistent tone to its Marvel Universe, so it would make sense to have one writer, with a background writing these superheroes, as the gatekeeper.
World-Builder?
With the possibility of script doctor in mind, what if Fox was hiring Millar to create connective tissue between their properties? We’ve seen this pay off in spades at Marvel Studios, with characters and Easter eggs appearing in each others’ films, all leading up to Avengers. Millar might be someone who can look at the big picture and figure out ways to make Reed Richards show up in an X-Men film in a way that makes sense, or simply have Wolverine and Ben Grimm share a beer in a post-credits sting.
Beyond that, Fox may be looking to expand their universe with the characters they have on hand. They’ve gotten some mileage out of breaking Wolverine away from the core X-Men franchise, and maybe he’s just the first of many. Would you pay to see a solo film for Storm or the Thing? Millar’s intimacy with the characters will help Fox determine which characters have the potential to break away, spawning their own successful franchises in the process. The studio would love to have their corner of the Marvel Universe feel just as cohesive and as big as the one that Marvel Studios controls. The hiring of Mark Millar just might be the first step in this direction.

Someone needs a locksmith: Chantelle Houghton unlocks the front door as Alex Reid's keys fail to work on her Essex home

It was once the fairytale castle that he shared with his princess, but it now seems he is no longer welcome there.
Alex Reid got a nasty surprise when he tried to open the door of the house where ex-fiance Chantelle Houghton and his baby daughter live.
The 37-year-old was left red-faced when his keys were unable to open the front door of the Essex home on Sunday evening.

Alex was seen arriving at the property at around 6pm when he tried turning his door keys in the lock.
It is unclear whether Chantelle had simply bolted the entrance from the inside or if she had changed the locks altogether.
As the cage-fighter struggled to gain entry he knocked on the door and an annoyed Chantelle, 29, opened up and gave her former beau an angry glare.

Chantelle had her hands full as she carried baby Dolly in one arm as she let Alex skulk inside.
The pair stayed inside for a couple of hours before Reid emerged later and in some what of a hurry to get out of the compound.
According to witnesses Alex was seen running out of the front door as he bolted into his car where he made a hasty getaway.
He then sped off quickly in his motor but managed to clip a parked car before mounting the curb and a grass verge.

Home sweet home: Once inside, Alex was all smiles as he shut the door behind him
While Alex has been spotted making frequent visits to the house recently, their love affair is still not back on.
However, the couple are believed to be on better terms for the sake of their three-month-old daughter.
A close friend told MailOnline: 'Alex is keen to see Dolly as much as he can but he and Chantelle are not back together.'
Reid meanwhile has spoken out again about his hope for a reconciliation with his ex.
He told Now magazine: 'This has hit me for six. It feels almost as bad as what Jordan did to me.
'I haven’t cried, though, because it’s still so early and I’ve still got hope.'

Bronx man busted in syringe robberies
Cops on Monday busted a Bronx man in a chilling rash of robberies where a syringe was wielded as a weapon, police sources said.
The Bronx Warrant Squad collared ex-con Anthony Angel Cintron in Yonkers, sources said.
Cintron, 39, is suspected of using a hypodermic needle to shake down at least nine victims since Mid-August, stealing iPhones, iPads and other electronics from his victims, police said.
Police say the creepy crook first struck Aug. 16 when he robbed a man near Castle Hill Ave. and E. Tremont Ave. in the Bronx's Westchester Village neighborhood.
Cops believe he stole a cell phone from a 14-year-old boy on a northbound 1 train near the W. 86th St. stop in Manhattan, cops said.
The 5-foot-8 Cintron, who sports tattoos on both sides of his neck, has a 27 prior arrests, according to a police source, most of them drug-related. He remains in custody and has yet to be charged, police said.

Rick Ross' Maybach Music Clashes With Young Jeezy And G-Unit At BET Awards
Members of Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group were involved in a clash with not only Young Jeezy's camp, but also 50 Cent's G-Unit crew as well.

ATLANTA — Rick Ross' Maybach Music camp is involved in quite a bit of drama, with both Young Jeezy and 50 Cent's camp.
During Saturday's (September 29) taping for BET's 2012 Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta Rozay and the Snowman reportedly got into a shoving match backstage before the scuffle spilled outside into the parking lot. Shots were fired and at least one man was said to be arrested.
That's not all. Multiple sources who witnessed the fray confirmed to MTV News that Ross' protégé Gunplay was also involved in fisticuffs with members of 50 Cent's G-Unit camp. Gun was seen with visible wounds and a witness told us that the Miami MC was put into handcuffs and detained, but a separate source close to Gunplay told us that he was not arrested.
Most of the crowd inside the Atlanta Civic Center, where the taping took place were unaware of the drama that jumped off around the same time that A Tribe Called Quest, Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes paid tribute to fallen music mogul Chris Lighty. 50 Cent and Fat Joe, who have quarreled repeatedly semed to have put their differences aside for the moment as they too appeared on stage to honor Lighty. Both Rick Ross and Jeezy also performed different sets during the award show.

New York DJ Funkmaster Flex took to Twitter to broadcast his account. "Jeezy and Rick Ross just had words backstage!! Pushing and shoving," Flex wrote. "Shots fired in parking lot!!! Gunman arrested!!!"
Machine Gun Kelly also seemed to get caught up in the whirlwind as well. "Got mase in my eyes. That beef sh-- just got real," he tweeted.
A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department told TMZ, "Shortly after 7:15 pm Saturday, a fight broke out in the parking lot at the Atlanta Civic Center (where the awards were being taped) between two groups. Officers on scene responded to break up the fight and used OC spray [commonly known as pepper spray] in the process. Individuals fled the scene. There were no arrests or reports of serious injuries. Reports of shots fired appear to be untrue."
The 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards will air Tuesday, October 9th at 8/7c.

Tristan Prettyman is what you might call a reformed commitment-phobe.
The sunny San Diego surfer gal with the piercing eyes and throaty laugh has cultivated a loyal following with her previous two albums, but the truth, Prettyman says, is that she always preferred to toe the line between “just in case” and “what if.”
“I think I always lived really cautiously on the last two (albums),” she says contemplatively. “I’d always come back to the idea of one foot in, one foot out - and that was so true for me in relationships and in life. I was always like, I’m sort of willing to do this, but I’m also ready to jump in case this doesn’t work.
“For a really long time, I never really played full in.”
Prettyman’s latest album, “Cedar + Gold,” comes after a nearly three-year hiatus and represents a movement toward the kind of thoughtful, inward-looking lyrics that have become synonymous with the singer-songwriter’s name.
Since she first emerged onto the music scene in 2005, the former Roxy model has made her mark in the indie-folk realm with catchy, swaying melodies, frequenting venues like The Hotel Cafe and growing a fan base with her signature rasp.
But the words that poured forth when Prettyman put pen to paper this time around were more than just whimsical love songs.
In the time that lapsed between the release of her last album, 2008’s “Hello,” Prettyman had hit a wall.
Her long term relationship with her boyfriend, fellow singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, had gone through a series of ups and downs, ultimately culminating in a broken engagement and a very public heartbreak.
The pair, who frequently collaborated on one another’s songs, announced their engagement in December 2010, but vowed to stave off marriage until gay marriage was viewed as legal and equal.
By June the following year, the pair had split.
“When someone asks you to marry them and you say yes, that’s going all in and the minute I did that, it ended and I had my heart broken,” she says. “And I’d never had my heart broken before. I always really protected it and I was always the person who broke up with the other person first.”
But though the breakup was painful, it turned out to be just the catalyst that Prettyman needed to take a long-needed vacation from the music industry.
“After the last record, I had spent about a year and a half touring, and prior to that I had been on tour for about six years straight and I was so burned out,” she recalls. “It was like, I want to do something else and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do this or not. I went traveling and I went to visit friends and I went to Bali and Costa Rica and I got really into yoga and I just put music on hold.”

Chris Lighty's Brother Wants Answers In Music Mogul's Suicide
'Chris was a go-getter, the ultimate non-stopping machine,' Dave Lighty tells 'Sway in the Morning,' discussing family's investigation.

Medical examiners have ruled the death of music mogul Chris Lighty a suicide, but those that knew the manager to the stars just aren't buying it.
Chris' brother, Dave Lighty, sat down with MTV News correspondent and Shade 45 radio host Sway Calloway, during his "Sway in the Morning" show on Friday (September 28). "I just feel like there are a lot of unanswered questions and I need answers," Dave said of his deceased brother and the investigation that his family is launching. "I was with my brother almost every day until the last couple of months because I was going to school. Nah, that's my brother. I know we were all going through stressful times. Everybody is sh--. The economy is terrible right now."
On August 30, Lighty was found dead at his Bronx, New York, apartment with a gunshot wound to the head after an argument with his wife. Investigators on the scene determined that the wounds were self-inflicted and the medical examiner later officially ruled Lighty's death a suicide. Reports have pointed to Lighty's debt to the IRS and his troubling marriage as reasons why the industry visionary would take his own life.
Dave believes that his brother, who oversaw the careers of music stars like 50 Cent, Mariah Carey and Diddy, would never take his own life. "Chris was a go-getter, the ultimate non-stopping machine," he said. "That's just not something I would see him putting upon the rest of us and everybody that he knows that looks up to him."
Lighty's family members aren't only people who believe there is something more to his death. 50 Cent is helping with their investigation. "There was too much planning to move forward to accept right away that he just shot himself," the G-Unit CEO told Fox News' New York affiliate on Monday.
It's been reported that Chris left a will, which left his wife in full control of his estate, but because of delicate nature of the case, Dave Lighty can't shed much light on the details of the investigation. "Once everything gets out there, it'll be known to the public," he told Sway. "But right now, I kind of got to keep things on the low."
