Detectives escort Leonardo Espinal, 47, who was charged in the death of his son in the Bronx, to court Friday.
The Bronx father charged with drowning his 5-year-old son and poisoning his other child was ordered held without bail Friday night, prosecutors said.
Leonardo Espinal, 47, fed rat poison to little Stewart Espinal and his sister, Mia, 7, after calling their mother and threatening suicide Wednesday morning, police and prosecutors said.
He was recently separated from the children's mother and was baby-sitting the kids at his stepmother's W. 179th St. home.
Espinal locked himself in a bathroom with the young boy and drowned him in the bathtub, cops said. They also said his daughter became very ill from the poison and had to be hospitalized after she experienced "severe vomiting."
When police got to the apartment around 1:30 a.m., they broke down the door to find Espinal cradling his limp son in his arms.
"Leo killed my baby," heartbroken mom Rosaura Abreu told a family friend afterward.
Espinal appeared before a judge Friday night after spending two days in the hospital while in police custody. He was charged with murder and attempted murder.
He is due back in court on Nov. 14.
