The mystery woman who blew the lid off former CIA Director David Petraeus' scandalous affair was identified Sunday as a social liaison to a military base.

Jill Kelley, 37, of Tampa, Fla., reportedly alerted the FBI several months ago about threatening emails she had received from Petraeus alleged mistress, biographer Paula Broadwell, a senior military official told the Associated Press.

The alarm sounded by Kelley, the unpaid social liaison to MacDill Air Force Base, got the FBI investigation rolling and uncovered the former four-star general's extramarital affir with Broadwell, authorities have said.

It was not immediately clear if Patraeus and Kelley were also engaging in romantic maneuvers of their own, but a person who knows both them told the AP that Kelley saw Petraeus often.

In 2010, Kelley and her husband, Scott, invited Petraeus and his wife, Holly, to be their guests at the annual Gasparilla parade in Tampa. At the time, Petraeus ran the U.S. Central Command from nearby MacDill Air Force Base. A family website shows photos of the general with one of the Kelleys' children.

Broadwell, 40, who wrote the biography "All In: The Education of General David Patraeus," has yet to publicly comment on the scandal that has rocked Washington and the U.S. security community.

The threatening emails Kelley received from Broadwell warked her to "stay away from" Petraeus, according to sources with knowledge of the messages.

A source told the Wall Street Journal that Broadwell, who lives in North Carolina, suspected Kelley was in a romantic relationship with Petraeus.

The FBI probe into the menacing emails uncovered other exchages between Broadwell and Patraeus that made clear their relationship had gone beyond professional, including one that talked about "sex under a desk."

President Obama accepted the 60-year-old Petraeus' resignation Friday, just three days after winning re-election.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-San Francisco), chairwoman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said Sunday she was blindsided by the bombshell.

Feinstein's committee, co-chaired by Georgia Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss, had expected Petraeus to testify Thursday about the Sept. 11 security lapses in Bengahazi, Libya, that led to the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

Feinstein said she spoke to Petraeus twice Friday before news of his resignation broke to the world.
