Notre Dame's Eric Atkins suffers injury at end of regulation.
There are high expectations at St. Joseph’s this season, the highest since the Hawks of Delonte West and Jameer Nelson were ranked No. 1 in 2004.
If these Hawks, the Atlantic 10 preseason favorites, soar to national prominence again, they might look back at their victory over No. 20 Notre Dame in the Coaches vs. Cancer semifinals Friday night as the start of things.
St. Joe’s, playing without suspended senior guard Carl Jones, its leading scorer the past two seasons, rallied from eight points down in the final four minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime, then outscored the Irish, 13-4, in the extra session. The Hawks got that statement victory they were looking for, 79-70, at the Barclays Center.
St. Joe’s (2-0) faces Florida State (2-1) in Saturday night’s title game at 9:30 p.m.
The Hawks’ win was made possible by quite the homecoming by Staten Island’s Halil Kanacevic. The former Curtis High School star, who played one season at Hofstra before transferring to St. Joe’s, was a load for the Irish to handle. The 6-8 forward finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists, three blocks and three steals. But Kanacevic had lots of help, including 21 points and 16 rebounds from Ronald Roberts and 19 points from sophomore guard Chris Wilson, who was filling in for the suspended Jones.
The Irish were hanging in, down 69-66, with 3:26 left in OT when their fortunes went decidedly south as Jack Cooley (14 points, 14 rebounds) fouled out. Notre Dame was done.
Seven straight points by Roberts gave the Hawks 73-68 lead with 42.6 seconds to play and the Irish, who shot 2-for-8 in OT, never made another run. Four straight free throws by Wilson and an emphatic jam at the buzzer by Langston Galloway capped the memorable night for the Hawks.
The Irish seemingly had things all but locked up when Eric Atkins drilled a huge three-pointer from the right corner with 4:00 left in regulation to give Notre Dame a 66-58 lead. Unfortunately for the Irish, that represented their final points until overtime.
Florida State 88, BYU 70: The Seminoles made the most of their first trip to New York City in 15 years by nailing 11 three-pointers and holding the Cougars (2-1) to just 33.3% shooting from the field to advance to the title game. Okaro White led FSU with 17 points.
