When the 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards air on October 9, fans won't see all of the drama that took place backstage in Atlanta, but the damage has already been done. T.I., who was in attendance last Saturday, attributes the conflict to a clash of "pride and egos."
During the taping, two separate fights broke out: One between Rick Ross and Young Jeezy's camps, and another between MMG's Gunplay and members of the G-Unit entourage.
Many of those in attendance did not witness the scuffles, but it wasn't hard for Tip to put in a good guess about what happened.
"I didn't even know about the fight," T.I. said in an interview with KTLA. "Men everywhere, we have huge egos and lots of pride. I don't know that particular incident personally, but most fights that I hear about, it's about pride and ego."
This week, BET's president of music programming and specials, Stephen G. Hill, addressed the incidents in an interview with Complex, dismissing reports that gunshots were fired and also blaming false information for blowing the situation out of proportion. "Reckless tweeting — one person said there was gunshots. Somebody took that," Hill said. "I used to do this thing when I was a little kid. I used to say something outrageous. I'd say, 'I read that somewhere.' I wrote it down, closed my eyes, and then I read it, and so it's true. That's exactly what happens with Twitter. People read it, so they think it's true, and people retweet it like, 'Oh my God, there were gunshots.' 'Cause some fool tweeted, 'I heard gunshots.' There were no gunshots."
G-Unit affiliate Mike Knox also opened up about the events of the weekend, specifically addressing his crew's brawl with Gunplay. Knox told Philly's Hot 107.9 that 50 Cent was not involved, despite Gunplay's story, but he wasn't apologetic for any of the fiasco. "The only thing I can tell you is he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and he was acting a certain kinda way that he shouldn't have been actin' and he got dealt with," he said of Gunplay.
Rick Ross, 50 Cent and Young Jeezy have not commented on the altercations that took place on Saturday.
