Scene of a horrific accident on Arthur Kill Road at Lee Avenue on Staten Island where a car crashed through the front of a house pinning a mother and 5 year old child beneath it.
A heroic Staten Island mom, pinned with her daughter beneath an impaired driver’s car that plowed into their home, gently held the 5-year-old hand’s until they were freed.
“It was terrifying,” critically-injured mother Lisa Roman told the Daily News from the burn unit at Staten Island University Hospital. “It was all so sudden.”
Roman, 40, and her daughter, Leonora, were asleep on a couch in the kitchen when the 2010 Hyundai Elantra blew a stop sign and blasted into their Tottenville house at 4:10 a.m. Friday.
Firefighters used air bags to gingerly rescue the trapped pair from beneath the car driven by Charles Tainor, 22, who lives down the street from the victims.
Both were thrown under the vehicle by an earsplitting crash that sent their terrified neighbors running into the darkness.
“The mother was pinned by the car, and the daughter was underneath the car,” said next-door neighbor Brittany Fernandez, 16.
“The mother was holding her daughter’s hand, asking if she was all right,” Fernandez said. “But the little girl wouldn’t talk.”

The 22-year-old driver, Charles Tainor, refused medical attention and was taken into police custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He was being questioned by cops.
Roman’s two teenage daughters — Melissa, 17, and Josette, 15 — were asleep in a bedroom and weren’t hurt. They stood howling in horror outside the house as rescuers and police arrived.“We thought it was a nightmare!” Melissa told the Staten Island Advance.
Roman suffered burns. Leonora was treated for a broken leg.
Tainor, who declined medical attention, was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated, assault with a motor vehicle and operating while impaired by drugs. A police source said Tainor told cops he had taken Keppra, a drug used to treat epilepsy.

The victims were rushed to Staten Island University Hospital in critical condition, but have since stabilized.
Roman said the prognosis was positive for both her and her daughter after their near-death experience.“My daughter is going to be all right,” she said. “God bless. She’s going to pull through. I appreciate everyone’s prayers. I’m going to be okay.”
The family had only moved into their apartment in the subdivided house six weeks earlier.
“They seem like very good people,” said landlord Al Calscione.
The badly-damaged house at the intersection of Arthur Kill Road and Lee Ave. was struck 11 years ago by a runaway truck.
