In just two days, Brooklyn's brand-new Barclays Center will open in grand fashion with a sold-out Jay-Z concert. After Friday's inaugural show, Hov will continue to christen New York's newest entertainment arena with a string of seven more concerts before the NBA's Brooklyn Nets take court, but before all of that, MTV News correspondent and "RapFix Live" host Sway Calloway got a tour of Brooklyn's hottest destination.
From the gate on 620 Atlantic Avenue, the Barclays screams BK, with a band-like outdoor façade made of rust-colored steel, a nod to Brooklyn's Brownstone houses that so many of the borough's residents call home.
The Barclays broke ground in 2010 and on September 28 it will open its doors to 19,000 fans who will all no doubt be throwing up the Roc, the diamond-shaped hand symbol made famous by Hov. In total, the arena features 101 luxury suites, four bars and lounge destinations, three clubs and Jay-Z's 40/40 Club and Restaurant. There will be eight retail shops as well.
While in the arena, the Barclays' vice president of programming Sean Saadeh gave "RapFix Live" the green light to hang out in one of the luxury suites, as well as take a tour of the Calvin Klein Courtside Club and, of course, the Brooklyn Nets' basketball court.
In the coming months, the multi-billion dollar complex will not only house the Nets, but also open its doors to an array of artists like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Green Day and Barbra Streisand. College basketball and boxing events will also bring fans through the door. Not since Ebbets Field, the Major League park which the Dodgers called home until the moved to Los Angeles in the late 1950's, has Brooklyn had an entertainment complex of this magnitude.
Are you planning to attend any of Jay-Z's concerts to open the Barclays? Let us know in the comments!
