Prince Harry was not at the base at the time of the attack on Camp Bastion in Helmand province.

Afghan insurgents donned U.S. Army uniforms before carrying out an armed assault on a British air base in southern Afghanistan, NATO said.

The attack on Camp Bastion in Helmand province, where Prince Harry is currently stationed on a four-month combat tour, left two U.S. Marines dead Friday.

NATO had no previous examples of insurgents using U.S. uniforms, which can be bought on the Afghan black market, according to CNN.

About 15 militants, divided into three teams, breached the base fence armed with automatic rifles and grenade launchers.

The highly organized attack left eight people wounded and did massive damage to refueling stations and aircraft hangars. Six fighter jets were destroyed and two others were damaged.

All but one of the insurgents was killed. The wounded survivor was captured.

The ISAF said Prince Harry, the third in line to the British throne, was nowhere near the attack and was never in any danger.

The Taliban claimed credit for the deadly raid, calling it a response to the anti-Islam film “The Innocence of Muslims,” which sparked protests at U.S. government buildings in the Middle East.

But ISAF spokesman Maj. Martin Crighton said there were no protests outside the base before the assault.
